Star navigation?
#1

Hey Gents!

Hope everyone's doing well. I tried an experiment tonight which boggled my mind, but worked very well! I took an Astronomy course in college several years ago and wanted to see if the stars in IL-2 were correct. I made successful flights from airbase to airbase on the Slovakia map by checking a star chart and correcting my heading based upon what it says. However, on said map, in order to align the stars perfectly with the star map, I discovered that the night sky looked most similar to the night sky somewhere around July 10th at 3 AM. Unfortunately, this was a winter map.

Now, go ahead, roll your eyes at me. I am by no means saying that this is crucial to gameplay, but, if we can find a way to rotate the star map in accordance with the season, what a cool way to navigate if the compass gets shot out!

What happens if your compass is shot out at 6:00AM on a totally overcast day?

(sorry had too).........Kewl observation, always some new great surprise from a very old sim!

Now.....who will produce a celestial navigation mod complete with a tiny sextant?

bomber mods with a navigator position? stick your head up thru the bubble and look around. instead of a gunsight you look through a sextant? eh? eh?

This idea is great, the day, you will help with sun (in one hour the Earth rotation is 15 degrees, so you can find south and guess North, West and East). The night, I think it's a bit different, only one star doesn't move, but when you make a mission over 2 hours, the stars had moved. It's hard to navigate with the stars only.
