[Photos] MSI Chicago - Spitfire, Stuka, U-505 (20 images)
#1

Last weekend I went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago...they have a Stuka, Spit, and some other stuff hanging from the ceiling in the main room. Stuka was captured in Libya in '41. I think it's one of two original JU-87s that exist in the world (original as in not rebuilt). Not sure where the Spitfire is from, though. Also included some pictures of the AMAZING u-boat exhibit there (U-505 captured in 1944).

Most of these aren't very good quality, as the lighting in a museum like that is dark and absolutely HORRIBLE and good angles were hard to come by. I also tried getting shots of markings, codes, and emblems for reference sake. Anyways, enjoy!

EDIT: my 500th post! Big Grin

Nice set of pics, shame about the lighting though.

One question, why do they always hang aircraft so you can't see them, why not hang them upside down??

there are multiple levels surrounding the room, so you can get above them. the top level allows you to go inside the 727. pretty cool. and every so often the boeing will come in for a 'landing' and the gear will extend, flaps and slats come down, and landing lights come on. Big Grin

are you kidding me HG!? you've never been there? Tongue

the other stuff at the museum is really neat as well, not just the aircraft. Takes a whole day to walk thru for sure and we didn't even see everything. The U-505 exhibit is awesome. to go inside the boat with a tour is only 8 bucks extra and they take your picture in front of it before you board.

Oh yeah and I wanted to mention, the Stuka was a HUGE airplane! I've seen this one a few times and I never get over how big the airplane was. The uboat is also a monster (Type IXc)...over 200 feet long. Certainly isn't big inside tho. I wanted to take some pictures of the interior but they won't let you.

Another thing....look at the conning tower on the U-boat...the .50-cal bullet holes are still there from when Wildcats started strafing it during the capture. A very interesting story:

Shame on me , I never bothered to go in there , my other half , she was pushing me to see some Egypt Pharaoh
exhibition if I remember correctly but in the end it was no go because of me 8)
Now after I saw these pictures , I was like , honey ? , why we don't go to see the Museum of Science and Industry ! .
It looks like I did strike a deal but she still have no idea we're going to see WWII planes ad U-boat , anything else is a bonus
Yummy , it's an excellent not much travel demanding short trip plan
I swear , I had NO idea they have WWII planes and U-boat on display , I must have been living under a rock or something

Thanks a million aviatorsneah Tongue

they have 'traveling' exhibits so check the website, but all this ww2 stuff is there all the time. they also have free days during some weeks so check that out as well....although it might be busy those days and you'll need a shoehorn and some crisco oil to get thru the place.

Thanks for "the tour" and decent photos as well!

So, where's the sponsor to get the Stuka back into flying condition, to appear at the CAF Airsho' 2012?

Thanks for advice Big Grin

I will probably dress myself and my other half in to full WWII military gear and we
will fight our way through the public masses and then will spend night at the museum Big Grin

We'll try to go during morning hours so there is hopefully less people wondering around exhibition Tongue .
