How work the pilot/head msh files?
#1

Hi mate!

Like someone know I'm trying to reproduce an historically set of flgiht suite (I'm beginning with the german K.so/33 and I'm at 50% of the work)!

In the working progress I see that the pilot use randomly the goggles so we can have open canopy plane with ungoggled pilot and also closed cockpit with goggled pilots!

For better historical purpose in some case I can't use self skinned goggles because even if I delete the goggles in the skin by use the same colour of the headgear (the goggled pilot skin have the goggles fasten that run over the headset) I still have great limitation when I'll try to reproduce the correct historical color that sometimes are different between the goggles fasten and the hearset.

Now the trouble of this post:

In another post Elephant (a great pilot skin maker) write that the goggles on or over eyes are managed from the Head msh file.

But I don't know how the msh files work!

Can someone teel me if this file is the same for all planes? (This can be a really heart saving future because I can find the goggled and the ungoggled msh and provide them with the skin I'll relize)

If not the same how can I open and edit every Head msh files for make it fit the open/closed cockpit of the relative plane?

Thanks in advance for the time you'll give me!

cheers

I have been looking at the pilot meshes for my Walrus project recently.

The goggles are included on the pilot skin
The lens of the goggles are defined separately as a transparent glass material.

This is the mapping for the pilot head.
The bits above the face are for the goggles, straps, flying helmet etc.
The large shape is the lens of the goggle which is a glass material.

Yes mate!

I know that the goggles are mapped in the middle left side of the pilot skin and here is mapped the fasten for the goggle , for the oxygen mask and for the part of oxygen tube protending from the oxygen mask too!

But the goggle use is realized only by the game engine when make the skin in the 3D because is into the head msh files that that is writed if that pilot have goggles on the eyes or on the front!

What I need is to undertstand if those file (head msh) is the same in all the 3do/plane folders or not and:

- if the various head msh files are the same, if is possible to relize a standard head msh files for all pilots to have one file with the goggles weared for open cockpit and another with goggles unweared for closed cockpit;

or

- if the various head msh are different from plane to plane how can I edit each one for do it anyway!

I have posted an image above.

As far as I am aware the same basic mesh is used on all the aircraft models but extra details are added on some models.
The same basic msh is also used for sailors on ships.

Not sure how to answer your other points.

Thanks mate but I have this mapping information , perhaps I explain my need not so understandable!

What I need is related at my desire to have goggled pilots on every open cockpit plane and un-goggled pilot on every closed cockpit plane!

Ok. I think I understand.

The msh models for pilot with goggles up and pilot with goggles down are two different models.

You need to identify the existing aircraft which have the correct pilot for you and extract the msh files.
For the pilot this would be the head model but for the gunners the head and body are a single msh.

You can then produce a mod for any other aircraft to swap the pilot msh's for the one you want. Since this is just a visual mod it should be fairly easy.

Great mate!

So , if I understand right , the two msh files should be the same for all plane changing only in one with the goggles on and the other with them over; so I can use the two kind of them to set all the correct pilot for the planes.

For doing this did I must to work on the msh?

If so how can I learn to do such modification?

I have d/l msh converter here but when I open the head msh files in text it show nothing (the pilot show some text for example)!

I don't think you need to edit the msh files.

If you want to change part of the aircraft, in this case the pilot, then it is like the Frankenplane technique.
Just swapping of parts.

You probably need to edit the hier.him to locate the msh files correctly --- not sure.

Thanks mate!

You are confirming what I'm thinking about those files!

I'll make some test and I'll report what I realize about!
