Ahhh, K9906/FZ-L was flown by F/Lt Stanford Tuck as part of 65(F) Sqn, Hornchurch, circa 1939, before the yellow rounds were added. Aslo the underside was the night/day scheme with no under marks and the reversed ailerons.

He joined 92 Squadron and went into action in May 1940. He recorded his first victory (a Me 109) over St. Omer, France. The same day he forced a Me 110 to crash land but to his surprise the pilot jumped out and opened fire on Tuck's Spitfire with a pistol and actually put a bullet through the windscreen: he was not allowed to repeat the action..."

I would like to do some Spitfires with the lettering and roundels on the wing root, but the stretching is so great they are impossible to get to a point I would be happy to release them

I thought your Sailor Malan skin for the MkV had the underwing roundels with the yellow band? Or did these not reach the wing route? Sorry to ask you all these questions, but you are the best spit skinner I know :lol:

Malens has the roundels underneath



His was flown as part of 74 Sqn in Aug 1940, so nearly a year later

Between April 1939 and June 1940 underside rounds were generally omitted, there was also a day/night scheme that had one wing painted black and one white, with the nose, rear fuselage and tail planes painted a pale blue.
There was also a short period with the ailerons painted opposite from the main wing colours

So is the Tuck skin I showed above correct or not? I think they had their (as in 92 squadron) GR codes up until the BoF...is this true? I can't remember.

Beautiful Skins! Is there an historical reason why Malan's Spit did not have the serial number (K9953) on the fuselage? Were the serial numbers only added later in the war, which i would find odd?

The serial is K9953, but all the info I can find says this was over painted, for some reason in 1939 the majority were for 'security reasons'??

If you are talking about ZP-A, that is 74 Sqdn (Saior Malan's bird) in 1940
