Aircraft Carriers (Dogfight)
#1

How are you supposed to take off from an aircraft carrier in dogfights? So far I've only been able to do it with the Hellcat.
Is there a trick?

Depends.....

Are we talking about a moving or stationary Carrier?
What type of Carrier?

Though I fly through the valley of death, I will fear no evil.....
For I am the meanest SOB in the valley!

Search for TDH on the Nasdac

It is short for Tall Dark and Handsome

I was going to add modest but TDHAM was allready taken

It's tricky, true. The secret is: training! Of my 10 ten attempts with a guns-only-armed F4U, 5 failed. Until I got the hang of it.
The Seafire behaves a little better. Here's a link to a youtube video, I posted some time ago to show some buds how to do a base circuit on a carrier.
It's in german, though. But you relax and ignore the Kraut chit-chat, one picture tells a thousand words! Perhaps it's of some help:

Take less fuel, if its a dogfight map, it likelly that you will not last long enogh to need more than 15 min. worth of juice... So take 50% or even 25%, on teh corsair and Hellcat that enough to fly a good while...

Let it fall off from the edge and the slightly pull up before hitting the water. Fly in 5 meters 'till you have 'nuff speed.

Dont take a full load of fuel. Make sure you lock your tailwheel. Dont deploy flaps until as late as you dare. Instead of trying to climb rather try to keep yourself level, a common mistake is pulling back too hard or too early.

As already stated, 25% fuel is the answer. Consider Holding on the wheel chocks until engine is at max power, & when you start rolling, try & get the nose down (i.e. tail wheel up) as early as possible - but ONLY select Flaps just before crossing the deck edge.

There is the option of 'back-taxing' to the rear of the flight deck - but this takes time AND if another player suddenly 're-spawns' you're in a whole world of hurt.

In the game selecting "gear-up" as soon as you cross the front end of the 'boat' helps (reduces drag AND buys you a few more inches of clearance from the sea surface) however in reality, I am pretty sure that this was discouraged because the motors driving the undercarriage drew power from the engine - just at the time you need max power.

Again carier decks usually carried markings showing "distance to run" so that for any given a/c weight x ship speed x windspeed over deck x expected a/c ground speed at end of deck = which point to start at. etc, etc. Todays aircraft launches still require the pilots to do their maths (also factoring ambient air temp etc) so as to 'adjust' the power settings on the catapults (or in the case of the 'Harrier' launches - where on the centreline does the jet need to start it's run)

Very few a/c could launch from a stationary carrier (If you google images of Brit carriers inside Malta Harbour for example, you'll see completely 'clean' a/c - and I guarantee that they are holding minimal fuel!)
