Would a night sky with stars like this ever be possible?

Just wondering with the modding ability that you lot seem to have, whether a clear, starry sky would be possible?

IMO probably as a texture, although I'm not sure if it would fit into the Il-2 environment. I wouldn't know how to do it though, and I think the pattern might repeat itslef.

probably doable...but like philip.ed said...just wouldn't fit, especially since you wouldn't see anything like that on a normal night.

It would "Look" Great but not realistic. I am an Astrophotographer (hobby) and even in the darkest of skies (no light pollution) the sky would never look this good.
That particular photo is a timed exposure. Depending on the equipment used it could be 10 to 40 min and tracked for that time, with the foreground added as a layer.
The foreground would be blurred due to the tracking motion compensating for rotation of the earth. So that foreground was probably shot at a different time.

What would be nice is the existing "stars" in game be accurate for time, season and geographical location. That could actually aid in navigation, if one wanted to go that far into the simulation.

If anyone is interested, that is a shot of the center of our galaxy, the Sagittarius region. If you look nearly dead center, in the middle of the "bulge" that would be our galactic center. All the hubub over the end of the world in 2012 has to do with the sun the earth and the rest of the planets "lining up" with the galactic center. I am not a subscriber to the Mayan calendar but just a heads up ...did you know sort of thing?... Also if you look at the colored area just to the right, there are some blues and reds that surround some stars, that's the Ophiuchus region, Real pretty when photographed right, not too shabby in this exposure, just small. Also the red knots distributed through the photo are hydrogen gas and they are star nurseries where stars are forming. This is a film image opposed to digital or CCD because film is sensitive to the hydrogen and will show brighter. There are many little "named objects" in fact too numerous to post here.

Just seems like the moonlight in game isn't all that bright, plus there is always sunlight on the horizon no matter what time of night.

I think something like this could be done if you could trick the game into using the lens flare of the sun, only tune it down. sort of like turning down the contrast or brightness. Thats how they did it in the movies anyways. Then you'd still have shadows and reflections. Then also the moonlight still provides the lumen it should. Lumen is the power measurement of light, in which a full moon has half the lumen of the sun.

Unlike the Sun textures , there's no water reflection from the Moon textures.


(Better rig and graphics now , so this reminded me to update my moon textures really needed to take down the contrast. Should have a HSFX/jsgme compatible set available soon)

That's because moonlight isn't bright in real life. It's our eyes that adjust to the light levels, and that depends on how much sunlight is reflected back by the moons surface. Some nights are pitch black, others readily visible, but unless you're near the poles in summer night-time it's alwas dark.

Moon textures

All tested with HSFX, I'm not using any other mod , UI , UP or SAS so maybe someone can give aheads up if its ok in this form for those.

Death Star et all still in there , just change name to moon0017.tga ( or maybe 0018 ) . Moon phases were'nt implementd in Il2 though all skins to allow it were in the original.

Consider that a full moon is half as bright as the sun, i would say that's still pretty bright.
None the less, it would be great to see shadows and reflections from the moonlight even if it meant the game had to simulate how our eyes adjust to the night.

In fact, the spotlights are pretty blinding when the shine at you, so it seems like something similar could be done, but it would take some crafty know how to achieve.
