From Ati HD4670 to Nvidia GTS250?
#1

Hi all. I have a VGA question. I`m planning to go from my Ati HD 4670 1GB
to Nvidia GTS 250 1GB (both are from GIGABYTE). Will there be any performance increase,
especially fps at perfect settings (a little higher AF, better clouds...)? I`m also planning to go from 17" crt to 22" lcd.

My specs are:

MBO: ASROCK 4COREDUAL-VSTA
CPU: DUAL CORE E6300 2,8 GHz
VGA: GYGABITE HD4670 1GB - 17" @ 1280x960
RAM: 2GB DDR2
PSU: LC POWER 600W
OS: Win XP SP3

Yes, but small - especially if you up the resolution. I wouldn't advise you to go for a GPU with 1GB of DDR3 memory, though - the RAM is limited either way by the capacity of the data rate technology. Theoretically, you'd be better off with 512MB of DDR4/5, or 1GB of DDR5, if you can afford the latter.

The GTS250's performance is on par with the HD4850/HD4770. That is actually a sizeable step-up from the HD4670. You will see a not insubstantial performance increase. But since you are also upping the resolution, some of those frames are going to be lost again.

Hello, BOYAN

Hi, everyone

Messer and Axial both have some important points to consider. I have my own viewpoint as well.

The Gigabyte GTS 250 is a good one, but let's look at the bigger picture.

For IL-2 with all the mods that we have now, I consider 3 GB system RAM and 1 GB Video RAM to be the minimum that we need for maximum graphics settings. More would be better, of course.

The 2 GB DDR2 is restricting your system. I suggest that you see about an upgrade in this area. Look into the possibility of , DDR3 or DDR4, (maybe even DDR5), if it is compatible with everything.

Try to find a compatible and affordable 2 or 3 GB of DDR. IL-2 users with 2 GB DDR5 are having fabulous image and good Frames Per Second. The DDR2 must go, in my humble opinion. This would be a better choice than a new graphics card if you had to choose one or the other.

Your Gygabite HD 4670 should be able to run IL-2 with Perfect Water and maximum, or near maximum settings. I would think that it should be able to run smooth frames, too.

Going to 22" over 17" would decrease performance. For your particular system, I do not recommend it. Do you really need a 22" screen so you can sit 10 feet away from the thing? It's up to you, but I would reconsider.

There is another whopper to consider: "Storm of War". You'll need a DirectX 11 system to run this one. The best thing that you could do in my humble opinion is to only upgrade your DDR and save your money for "Storm of War" DirectX 11 equipment. In case any readers did not know, "Storm of War" will be a combat flight simulation by 1C: Maddox Games who created IL-2 and SoW will be released in a few months.

In the meanwhile, you can fully utilize what you have now by applying the techniques in my tech help Sticky topic:

Of course, after adding any major new hardware, it would probably be a good idea to review my topic.
