First you need the ok of the one who made it, then you need the 3DS of the model,
The MDL will not work, then you need to rework the model a FS model is not made
In the way a IL2 model needs to be, then you have to make a 3 stage damage model
A FS model does not have a damage model like IL2 models, then you need to make
A cockpit or use one from IL2, then you need to make the LODs for IL2 and all the
BMPs that need to be done that IL2 needs for a plane, you just can not take a FS
Model and put it into IL2 and have it work.

... And then you'd have to get the DM, FM etc sorted out too...

Or to put it another way, you'd almost certainly do better to start from scratch.

Has anyone ever succeeded in doing this, and come up with a working, flyable aircraft?

I've seen an imported model once. I haven't heard anything from him after the first vid...

You didn't hear anything because of the aforemetioned! Big Grin It really is too much hassle. Although effects from other games have been successfully used in Il-2.

Il-2 aircraft are consturcted from many different 3D files, but you can do it.

Yes you can use Max 2010 as I know one other that has.

It would use the same tool for Max here;
viewforum.php?f=31

And would use the same way of doing it here;
viewforum.php?f=82

Hope that helps.

The Cant1007 is done starting from a MAW (free add on for CFS3) AI model.
Yu can only use the D0, but you need to resize,and most important, cut away thousand of poly (7000 polys less for CANT1007)
No one poly remains untouched.
After that you can start cutting, renaming, make null, LOD, Damage, shadow, caps, overlay .....
Due to modifications you also loose the mapping ....
Probably i was more fast starting from scratch.
