little hint no.1:churches and autopop
#1

Since I'm very good at theory (and very bad in practice  ) I decided to start a couple of threads which may be useful to those which are actually give us pleasure with their maps. So here's the first, I know Zo and Kapteeni will laugh, they know my obsession:
You create your village/town template for using it with autopop. Don't place any church on the template! In real life normally the churches are located somewhere in the middle of a village. If you place your churches on the template you don't have control over the place where the church appears in the xth village of your map. It may appear at the edge of the village with a "wrong" orientation, etc. Instead of this just don't place the church on the autopop template. Create your towns and villages with autopop and no church. There'll be no churches. Now you can go and place the churches on each village/town MANUALLY. This is not a time consuming thing! Imagine you have 100 villages on your map. It would take maybe 30 seconds /village to place the church so it would take altogether 3000 seconds= less than an hour to place them.
Why I care so much about the churches: you know that in any village everything is built around the church (and the local pub and the school!). The church is at the HEART of the village. It's very seldom that it is located out of the place, but this is exactly what happens when using autopop...If the church is not at the right place the village is compromised...
Towns: usually there's a couple of churches located at the heart of the town, different confessions let's say maybe.. again easy to place them manually..

This as well as the next threads are also intended as brainstorming sessions, please if you have some other ideas, post them in these threads

Good tip. Main buildings are always in the center of town.
This same method could also be applied to other large buildings which might appear in unlikely places from autopop. But it would be more time-consuming to populate those larger buildings and defeat the purpose of making a template. It might be easier to just delete them after autopop has populated.

I guess it can be a matter of compromise between the autopop speed and the manual placement. Then, no matter how good a template is after you fly a bit over the map you'll see the pattern repeating. So it's good anyway to have the pattern broken by manually inserting a small number of larger objects as you said to personalize this and that town or village...There's also the possibility to break the template pattern by randomizing similar buildings after the autopop has populated the map... I think either Zipzapp or Zuti came with such a randomizing program!

The "problem" IMO is that using autopop is ver hard, lots of mapmakers including me can't make it work, so you're tip make sense but unfortunately we don't know how to use autopop Sad

If I have some time I'll try to write a tutorial it's makes life easier and it's also fun creating the village and town templates 8)
Not sure maybe there is one already somewhere here or other sites?
