(WIP) large Map of German_Czec Border
#1

Hi all,
I just wanted to post some pic's of a map I have started and get some reaction from the community in general about it. Also any advice from mapmakers would also be welcome.
The map is of the german Czec border and includes prauge, pizen and goes north to cottbus and west to jena, so it includes dresden and leipzig

I started this map because of an idea i had for a alternative history campain, starting from the assasination of Hitler on 20/6/44.
To cut out all the politics surrounding my campain, it starts with the new Germany defending southern germany from the russians and the allies trying to halt the march of communism into europe.
The map is meant to expand on the KM_Nordbayern map.

I'm going to post some screenies of what i have done so far,but it is still in early stag of development. I have worked the map_h so that all river's are at 0m hight, and with some level curve adjustments and a lot of trial and error i think it's looking passable. There is only 1 lowland texture at the moment as i have just started to texture the map.
A shot of where prauge will stand[Image: grab0002.jpg]
A view looking down 1 of the river valleys

Yes i did have to think about the imfamous destruction brought on that city when i started this project. The air war that was waged on the German People did little to shorten the conflict, and the effect on moral was much the same as what happened in london during the blitz, only serving to harden the population's will to stand and fight this threat. Many other city's suffered the same fate, including Hamberg and Berlin. Both of these are available for this game, which is after all a WWII cobat flight sim and many bombing campains have already been made for it, so i saw no reason not to make this map.

Getting some texturing done now, although still not made up my mind on the lowland and farmland tex's still trawling for some that blend nicely, the mountain and wood tex's look quite nice.

Czech border, not Czec

Pizen - Pilsen or Plzen or Plzeň (in Czech) - Have you heard about "Pilsner beer" yet? Perhaps not. If you heard about that you would know.

And one more thing - this should have been called "German-Czech NW border" as I miss the south part where the frontiers of Bohemia, Austria and Germany intersect. (The same for German-Polish/General Gouvernemnt and Moravia/Silesia intersection.)

OK, I fo not want to criticise only - U did quite a decent job with the Vltava river in Prague.

God speed to you with this project.

I think the area should be more agricultural. I live in germany, and nearly every mile is covered by fields or forrests. We dont have much of these swampy grass areas.

I agree with Batbomb - it should be more like Slovakia map.

Thanks cracken and batbomb for your comments, these are the sort of comments i was looking for. Not being for this area of the world and working fron the limited reference material i have i welcome any help i can get to try and get this map looking right. on the subject of textures im just sorting out some agricultural tex's and i looks like the SK and the rom tex's will be the ones i use.
Ill post some more when i have a section done with them and you can let me know what you think.

I don't particularly like the brown wood. It just doesn't look right for this "green" region. You can use Google Earth or Google maps to get a good view of what this area looks like.

I commend you on taking on such a tremendous project. I tend to shy away from making maps with large cities and my rivers don't look as nice as yours either.
Good luck!

The woods should colour coordinate with the landscape tiles. If the tiles are "green" in tone then the woods have to be green too. The Slovakia stuff, for instance, is a lot "browner" than the Romania stuff and it is difficult to mix the 2 sets of tiles and have a good result.

GREAT looking textures, both hills and low areas! Confusedhock:

Wood color... maybe a bit greener... but not "aggressive green".
"Wood template" looks very repetitive in Il-2 maps... with a drop of grey - it is less visible.
Just my opinion...

Great job mate...
