South Vietnam WIP

loving the map and hope for an update with buildings in small towns. Smile

Hello Russ_Ace, sorry for the lack of info lately but I've been busy with other things so the map has took a back seat. Also having the kitchen and bathroom re-done so things are a little mad around here at the moment.

There will eventually be villages added but at the moment I'm consentrating on the airfields and the main population centres so most towns and vilages are just using textures for now until I find the time to populate things.

I'm in the process of adding a new texture around the airfields, hope it is ok.

With the earlier texture I wasn't sure how to get rid of the tiled effect so just blured the texture to help it blend in, I've now sort of got the hang of dealing with that so this texture is the replacement. I think it looks much better. This is a trial of the tree file so it may have more trees added, not sure yet.

Craken has now built the first campaign for this WIP map so it has been quite interesting to play an actual campaign on it, thanks Tom. This has given me the chance to actually use the map as intended rather than for test purposes. There is still much I need to improve, but I think I now have the knowledge to actually get there.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

take ur time and have fun with this. i dont want this rushed or take priorety over any other thing in the real world. Its looking fantastic, if only i had ur skills!

Hello all, with the release of the raiders campaign by Craken I thought it time to put a little effort into texturing the map.

Other than three of the shots these screens are mainly shot using that campaign because I've concentrated on the areas used in it.

The first two shots are from the river system near to Tourane(Da Nang).
I've now added a tree map texture along the side of the roads, the wood texture is used beyond that, means you can leave the road and go into the trees without blowing up the jeep. Unless you drive too far of course and meet the wood texture effect, BOOM. I hope this is visually more appealing if you drive the map.

Three and four are the rescue mission from the campaign, No 3 I think.
I changed the skin to try it out, it uses a US scheme in the campaign.

This image was taken near Kratie airfield and is from the campaign.

This is from the same mission but near Gia Nghla.

The next few images show a Skyraider mission from the campaign that departs Bien Hoe and lays down a strike near Gia Nghla.

This image is taken near to Pakse airfield. The river edges now have a new texture which I think is much better than the original.

I'm using the wood effect now for most of the map because I think it looks better than just a normal texture but near to roads and airfields there is a mix of textures, some with a tree map. I hope this improves the whole look and feel of the map. Comments would be welcome.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

IMHO this looks good and better with the trees compared to textures only.
Good job! The images you show transport a feel for 50s /early 60s.
Cheers

Hello all, here is the link to the latest update of my South Vietnam map.

Sorry this update took so long but i've been having modem problems that are now thankfully sorted.

Here are a few images.

I'm such a bummer. I confused your map with Batbomb's Hanoi map originally. (Both great Big Grin )..
I would like to try this one as well. Thanks for sharing! The screens and the texture parts I couldn't resist to look at look very decent!
Yehaa, another South East Asia map!

Tom

Could someone tell me how to install this map? Please?

XLO-JOKER.....OUT..........

Hello TomFF, hope you like my efforts. This map has been around considerably longer than the Hanoi map, surprised you've missed it. Enjoy.

Hello XLO-JOKER, the install of the map depends on which modded version you have, there are various ways. I use UP-2 and for my set up you just need to copy and paste the MODS folder in the download into your IL-2 46 game and let it overwrite the MODS folder there. Once that is done look for the folder Files, go into that and find maps. In that folder you will find a file called All. Copy and paste the following text into that and then save it.

PS_South_VietNam PS_South_VietNam/load.ini

You should then be good to go. The older way of doing things involved following the path MODS, MapMods, Maps and the All.ini was kept in there, again same procedure as above.

Note: in UP-2 the added maps actually reside in the folder Files, maps, but I prefer to put everything in the MODS folder, saves confusion I think because that is where they were originally.

Thanks mission_bug, Ill try it as soon as I get home from work today. I do use UP 2.1, but not sure if I'm using it right.Seems that some mods (like CY6's skyraider, ac-47, L-5)had to go on my MODS folder, then other mods(like the "gore mod") works fine by just dropping into my jsgme folder. So I'm not always confident when installing some mods.Thank you for your help, I'll let you know the outcome. P.S. GREAT looking map!!!

XLO-JOKER.....OUT.........

Good job, it looks much better now. However, it still cries for 1 thing - populating. The city of Hue e.g. looks like some kind of desert at close distance.
Also I think you should've not remove city textures from already populated part of Saigon - it looks like tarmac desert from far away.

Hello mati140, I'm glad you like the new texturing and I agree the map is crying out for populating. I've added a few buildings to Kon tum and I think Pleiku but I keep shying away from populating Hue. It is quite an interesting city as it seems to be surrounded by a huge citadel of some sort, not sure I'm up to that. The Grey in Saigon was deliberate to give me the chance to build the industrial area, if I'd used the normal city textures there would have been roads and such in all the places I didn't want them. It could do with some kind of more interesting texture though I have to agree.

I've passed the map over to Anatoli ( he who built Tan San Nhut) for a while now, he's been doing some research on French forts and convoys during the conflict with the Viet Cong during the fifties so if all goes well with that there will be a little more detail on the map, it will give the mission builders something to get their teeth into eh.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

Please Pardon my ignorance, but I guess I'm going to have to be told where to put the "missions" folder that came with the map so I can try it out.

XLO-JOKER.....OUT...........

Thanks a lot again Mission_bug, I will try your map tonight. Since I love the 1st gen jets already flyable and 2nd/3rd generation jets to come in UP/HSFX, this will be a very interisting area!
Cheers!
Tom

Hello TomFF, Craken has made a campaign for this map and in the last mission you get to fly the F-86 against the Mig.

Hello XLO-JOKER, just copy and paste the missions folder into your IL-2 146 folder it will overwrite the missions folder in there. When you load your game you will be able to load the individual missions in the FMB.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin
