Now I get it. I was talking about files located in "...\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\PaintSchemes\Noseart" folder, while you mean SQUADRON INSIGNAS, right?
If that is the case, I'm afraid i don't know how to help you, sorry.
All I know is the art appears on the nose. :-)
The misunderstunding rose because the game names as "nosearts" only images which are located in the folder I wrote above.
Those images (256x512) behave as I said about left/right side and you can add one without the need to mod anything, but the game only allows them to be displayed on some American planes and, furthemore, only if you select correct nationality.
I.E. If you go to Quick Mission Builder and select a P-51 Mustang, In the advanced plane configuration menu you should select USAAF/USN/USMC. Only then, in the bottom right corner, a "Noseart" selection slot will appear.
What you were trying to modify, instead, is the image depending on the "Squadron" selection slot, am I right? That's why you had to tweak quite a lot to create "your own squadron" in order to display your custom image.
I never thought about doing this, and it is indeed a smart idea. But this way, i'm afraid there's no way to display this kind of images on both sides of the plane, unless someone creates a proper mod (and if this can be done at all). Besides, squadron pics are shown way smaller than noseart pics.
If everything else fails, and you only have a few nosearts of choice, you can choose your favourite skins for your favourite planes and just paste your noseart on them. Crude, but effective!
Hopefully the stupid german Zensurbehörde doesn't make all German Planes uflyable like it did for the german version of birds of prey...
