I do not think we could understand what it was like in real war to see the other side do it to us and not follow. Its not a question of personal morals at that point but revenge. In WW1 is was kill the machine not the man as a rule of thumb.
In Il2 its if you like the other guy or not.

Real men finish the job. If the bastard's still alive then obviously all your fancy technology and guns have come to naught. The only remaining option when faced with a pilot who won't go down like a man with his bird is to ram him with your own ship. To do anything less is to dishonor oneself.
