The system which you have is (pardon my frankness) not a strong one, so I recommend DirectX for challenged systems. (Most people should use OpenGL)
Your system should not receive any powerful upgrades because it is not designed to handle any monster sized equipment. In my opinion, you should continue to save money for a whole new, powerful rig someday.
