You could try this.
*Get rid of the opening ubisoft splash screen for faster load times and potential issues with crossfire/sli

Maybe it's a no brainer now, I see a number of posts on the subject. I had to post to share my good find - I eliminated the splash screen
Go to Steam>Steamapps>Common>IL2-Sturmovik Cliffs Of Dover>Parts>Gui.
Then rename logo.wmv.
The results were extraordinary. I like so many others, have suffered from poor frame rates on what i thought was a decent system (AMD BE Phenom II 3.4 Ghz, 8 gigs RAM, and 2 x 5830 in Crossfire, lame cards i know). Anyhow -- I dropped the splash screen and since my settings were so low from before, my frame counts were 200 frames per second and peaking to 240. I immediately went into the video settings and jacked everything up - I can run most 'quick' missions at 80+ frames per second, and even the dreaded London tourist, I can get around 40 fps with lots of buildings. Someone had written that the splash screen sets some cards in a 2D mode, and they don't exit. Clearly something like that is happening. Dropping the splash screen was the only change i made for massive performance increase. Yes, I have the latest patch.
Also, here is some of my notes that I wrote for my group after 2 weeks of tweaking:
You're going to need all the resources your system can muster to run this game. Here are some notes that might help you optimize your fps or realize your capped potential.
First things first: Don't expect great results from the game's current state. Patches are coming to fix major performance issues with the game.
Optimally, you'll need more than 1.5GB+ VRAM to run 35fps smoothly over land with MED/HIGH settings(the next patch might fix this). People with 1.5GB+ and PCU 3GHz+ are getting the best results.
Ok, here are some tips Ive read that have helped me:
*Stop all of your Antivirus software
*Stop all unnecessary background programs
*Update to latest drivers
Video Options screen
*If you have less than the above benchmarks, you're going to need lower settings than this screenshot for over land. Better performance is experienced over the channel.
Notes:
*
Texture Quality Players have reported a performance boost after setting Texture quality to HIGH from ORIGINAL (Original is highest setting)
*
Forest has a huge effect on performance.
*Buildings Amount effects the rendering of buildings at a distance. Setting this lower will cause buildings to look like legos until they render.
*Disabling your rear-view mirror can dramatically help frame rates on takeoffs and landings. Since the mirror has not reached its full potential, I disable mine with good results.
*Only supercomputers are flying over London with 30fps+
*Shadowing on the ground/trees is not working correctly as of yet and needs to be fixed in a patch. For best results, set your fly-times to morning or sunset.
*Sound is being fixed in a patch
*Players are having trouble with controllers mapping correctly. If your plane does not trim correctly or pulls to the side, go and remap your AXES trim. I had to remap my RUTTER trim there.
*Shadows check-box has a 5+fps effect on performance. (Awesome cockpit shadows I cant live without)
Of note: Moderators have posted not to make major changes with your confi file due to the current unstable state of the game.
You can get the game to a very flyable and fun state to practice your engine start-ups and do some sight seeing, even smooth dog-fighting/bomber intercepting with the right settings. But, I would probably wait to get into the campaigns or anything dramatic etc until after the first patch
