Bonjour Ted! Big Grin

thanks a lot, very interesting film! 8)

To comment a few comments there, I think the Spitfire got his name
from the fact, that at first it had had around 12 machine guns and it
literally spit fire! Am I right??

Hallo Jambo !!

Wie geht's ?

You maybe right, where does the Spitfire's name come from ? I don't know... Sad

BTW, she has been designed to have 8 machine guns, so that's why Mitchell designed an elliptical wing.

There is a good very article in Wikipedia HERE

But for the name... :-? If someone knows something about it I would like to know ;o)

Have a good day Jambo !!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Ah, 8 machine guns then! 8)

I just forgot, English people were / are always modest and humble. Smile
The Germans would tried to squeeze at least 12 or more machine guns into a Spitfire

Bonne journée Ted!

Very dramatic, thx for the link! Big Grin

Not sure about the source of the name, but i've read that the designer would have chosen a different one.

Jambo

LooooL ;o)

And We, The French People, would have tried to squeeze only 2 machine guns/cannons, so that's why we've got a lot of plane that had problems with their weapons.. :Smile) :Smile)

Concerning the Spit, I've heard that the designer had locked himself into an office in which there was no ruler, to draw the Spitfire. He thus had to draw her only with curved lines. That is why we call Spitfire: 'She': drawn in curved lines as a woman...

Am I wrong ?

BTW, I would like to know if Spitfire comes from this expression "to spit fire"... If someone could confirm, it will be appreciated!

I'm not sure about about that :|
Would be a very funny joke if it isn't

As for the name Spitfire, it was originally called the Shrew, but R. J. Mitchell's daughter called it the "Spitfire", also it sounds more like a bloody violent name that will sounds more war like and to scare the enemy  8)

Thats why its called the Spitfire :Smile)

As some people have some questions about the name of the Spitfire, this is what Tony Holmes writes in his book "Spitfire vs Bf109" published by Osprey on page 10 of his magnificent work about both the legendary Spit and the Messerschmitt:

"According to the historian Robert Bungay, Vickers appeared to think of aeroplanes as "bad tempered women". They had previously come up with "Shrew" but Mitchell apparently objected to this denigration of his elegant design and was overheard to remark caustically that is was 'just the sort of silly name they would give it.' The eventual name actually came from Vickers' Chairman, Sir Robert MacLean, who called his daughter "a little Spitfire", and it was approved by the Air Ministry.
I think history is served with this and I hope it may bring all airplane and history lovers to read the book for it tells a lot more about the Spit and the Bf-109 we don't know. By the way, magnificent video, but some of the footage in which a train can be seen blown to pieces... not done by a Spit... sorry Cry but actually it was a P-47D Thunderbolt pilot who did this.
I surely hope this info was helpfull. Big Grin
