Can anyone offer any tips on how to introduce 'variables' into missions so that the unexpected can happen?

Hi, regan

I assume by the question that you have at least a basic understanding of how to create a mission in Full Mission Builder, is this true? Smile

Simple Campaign or Single Mission (Not a Dynamic one)
One way to create random occurances is to put a bunch of variations of the same mission on the same line in the file. By listing the same name with a different number for each variation (on the same line), the computer will pick one of the variations of that mission

Example:

Bf-109Career_01001 Bf-109Career_01002 Bf-109Career_01003 Bf-109Career_01004 (You chose the name when you make the mission or career)

You can have as many mission variations as you like for each line and continue past the tab further down as long as it is uninterrupted for each mission line.

The computer will pick one of the variations of the mission at random.

Dynamic Campaign
Creating a Dynamic Campaign from scratch is the other way of doing it and the computer will make aircraft appear and travel in unpredictable ways each time you fly the thing.

I recommend going to Flying Nut Case website on Full Mission Building.

He will get you started with the basics and you can come here for the more advanced things once you are ready. Smile

He and other people have some nice tutorials on YouTube for this, too.

I have found that the most realistic and most variable (random) missions are online combat with live players.

I hope that I helped.

If you are new to the FMB I would also recommend my "Quick and Sipmle guide to the FMB" found here - viewtopic.php?f=94&t=27704

if it will work with il2 1946 but i guess it will be ok according to the author's statements here at SAS http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=450.0
it wotks in 4.09m. 8)

One other mention here: DCG ( http://www.lowengrin.com/news.php ). Define settings, place, time and flights and off you go. Simplest solution, IMHO.
Also works with in-game online campaigns.

BTW @Fireskull, thx for the info about randomized missions, it's my tenth year playing Il-2 and I still learn something new every day! Big Grin

@ regan: where's Sgt. Carter...?

Thanks to everyone for a great response. I have had the game since it first came out and I have made my own stuff with the editor but its obvious there are a lot cleverer people here than me and I figured that these people were probably doing things with missions etc. that I have never thought of. Anyway thanks again for all your suggestions and I'll certainly follow them up and Bearkiller72, yeah I remember 'The Sweeney'.

I'm sure that I can speak for everyone in saying that you are very welcome. We have many helpful people here who care about other members, so I hope that you return to our community. Smile

By the way, guys...

I used to spend many hours in creating custom Single Missions, Static Campaigns, and custom Dynamic Campaigns for a friend of mine and myself for offline fun.

Randomization

Randomization that I mentioned earlier can be used for each one of these.

When I was serious about it (did it for about 3 years), I could create a Single Mission with about 20 variations for Randomization in about 30 minutes. How I did it was to grab the template (you'll learn about that) and change the take-off and landing times, altitude of a few planes, and slide the waypoints of ground and aircraft. This usually can be done in under 1 minute per variation, so making 20 or more or them is easy once you get quick at it.

Static Campaigns

Static Campaigns are even better with Randomization than the computer could ever make for you in Dynamic Campaigns. You will never remember what you created when you include about 5 to 30 variations per mission and you can make it more exciting than the computer can in Dynamic Campaigns. The computer will never have the human intuition that you have for what makes an exciting mission creation.

Dynamic Campaigns

As mentioned earlier by someone, this is the easiest way (but not the best IMHO) to created random occurances in missions.

I made this into a Sticky Topic.

Enjoy!

Hi,
I say reluctantly something in such a discussion but that's my opinion:
Missions in a dynamic campaign are not created "randomly", but should match the current situation of the entire campaign! The random dogfights occur in the air as each squadron pursuing its own goals to move the Fronlinie!
In addition, missions in a dynamic campaign are unpredictable! As in reality, you never know exactly what to expect in the next mission!
In my experience, each campaign type has its advantages and disadvantages and making a dynamic campaign is at least as difficult as static campaigns!

Can someone plase help me decipher this explanation a little bit? What same line in what file? Thanks.

The links to Flying Nutcase's site in Fireskull's post no longer work since Flying Nutcase is no longer supporting his site. Sad
You would need to go to the Internet Archive to see the relevant answer to your question provided by Fireskull's links.

(I know smg13's post is quite old but the relevant answers needed updating anyway and hopefully if he hasn't figured this out and he is still around this will show him how to do it. 8) )
