ATI 9800 pro 128Mb -to- Nvidia 8600GT 512Mb ?

Ok guys this is the crunch....

I'm upgrading my PC; I'm doing this on a budget so I can't afford the top notch hardware...

My old PC had an AMD Sempron 2800 1.6Gz with 768Mb PC3200 and running a rather nice ATI 9800 pro 128Mb... This setup has served me well.

The new system will be, an Athlon 64 Dual Core 4800 2.5Gz x2, Corsair 2Gb PC2-6400, and a Nvidia 8600GT 512Mb....

Running with XP pro...

Just wondering how much of a step up the 8600GT 512mb is from the ATI 9800 pro 128mb in regard to IL2...(I want the extras processing power for DVD backups and .mp4 conversion....Dual core makes a massive difference in this regard....)

Thx for the feed back....Just wanted to know how the card is with IL2 really...Not all cards are good with OpenGL....

The chances are that I'll get the 8600GTS model rather that the plain 8600GT...

In general nVidia cards have a better track record W.R.T. OpenGL.

To what Radeon X1x00 card could you compare the 9800? If you know that, you can compare that to the 8600 in the Deskyop VGA charts at Tom's Hardware...

Well! had a cpmplete change of mind and went for an ATI x1950 pro 512mb instead.....

I tried a 8600GTS 512mb with IL2 on a friends PC over the weekend and I can't say I was that impressed with it...I thought it was so so!.....and the benchmarks for the x1950 pro edge the 8600GTS out across the board.....(Not to say I like the setup of the ATI drivers config better)
