Operation Cobra - RAF Spitfire IX Campaign WiP
#1

June 10th 1944, D+4

The landing phase of Operation Overlord has been successful so far. RAF Servicing Commando Units arrived at Gold beach on D+1 and immediately began to construct airfields under the constant barage of German 88mm guns still in range of the beachhead. In our sector we now have eight operational airfields.

Earlier today, Wg Cdr J Johnson landed with 36 Spitfires of 144 Canadian Wing at B3 airfield at Croix sur Mer. 602 Squadron is now based at B8.

You will lead 602 Squadron RAF in 80 missions supporting the invasion as it fights yard by yard against elite German Panzer Divisions. From the failures of Operation Epsom and Perch to the breakthrough of Operation Cobra and the liberation of Northern France.

Coming soon...

The map is LAL_Rone's Normandy 44 map which hopefully should be available to download at AAA by the time this campaign is finished.

Hello Huxley,

If you need a generic skin (no codes) for the 602 sqdn (sqdn letters LO - *) at the time of these operations in Normandy, let me know, by e-mail.

Cheers,

Vince

Johnson was commander of 144 Wing, not 144 squadron.

144 Wing comprised of RCAF squadrons 441, 442 and 443. All 3 squadrons flew Spit IXc's, except 441, which had a mix of IXc and IXe. Wink

Excellent info. Thanks.

If you don't mind I'll get in touch before the release to double check some facts. I'm not promising that this is going to be 100% historically accurate, however I have put a lot of work into the movement of the front lines so that important objectives are achieved on the correct days.

The Luftwaffe are much stronger in this campaign than they were in reality. The idea of this campaign is that it's fun and varied, with lots of action rather than an accurate representation of events. However, I also want to avoid any glaring factual mistakes that could spoil it so I appreciate any input.
