freeze and crash- help!!!
#1

hello everyone. Can someone please tell me if any of you have had this problem and also please tell me how you dealt with it.

for some reason, my game crashes at random times when i'm playing '46. whether i'm in the middle of a mission or when i'm selecting something in a menu.

what happens is, it simply freezes for a second. it then goes to a black screen for a second and then white. i see the curser which is the vista's little blue spinning "loading" circle ring thing, but i can't move it. the mouse doesn't respond to it, so i ctrl+alt+del. for a second i see the "program is not responding" window, but then it goes to the "log out", "shutdown", ect option screen.

my computer doesn't do this with any of my other games and has seemed to become more frequent in doing it. i utterly love this game and this is starting to make me mad.

my computer's pretty good.

intel 2 quad core processor
3 gigs of ram
nvidia gt 9800
windows vista home premium

is it my drivers or something?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!!

1) Disable every mod who have a Microsoft Acess Table File inside (like SMOKES/TEXTURES ones..) putting a "-" in front of its folder.

2) Chek if your processor fan don't have dust.

3) Check for temperature of your Graphic card: try to use a program who give more "spin" to your Card Fan (like Ati Tray Tool if you have an ATI card.., don't know for NVidia ones).

Rivatuner is a good tweak program for nvidia, and ATI as far as i know. It has a temperature monitor, as overheating also sprung to my mind although if you font get this with other games.... maybe not? Also, if this is the only game with these problems then a reinstall might solve the problem.

I had the same problem as you do. The cause is a conflict with Vista and OpenGL/Java. If you've installed the latest Java version (anything greater than 10), uninstall it. IL-2 doesn't get along with it. The most stable video drivers I've found so far for Vista and IL-2 are the 181.20 drivers.

Also, D/L the new .dll's from the 1C website. The came out on the 13th of this month.

Once I did all of that my crashes stopped. I've been running crash free for the past 4 days now.

Though I fly through the valley of death, I will fear no evil.....

thanks for the reply everyone. i do appreciate it. i cleaned the dust off the fan (there was a fair bit) i'll see how that goes.

how can i tell what version of java i have? (i don't even know what the hell it does, besides ask for and update every now and then). and do i just uninstall it like any other program? will my computer simply shit itself with the absence of java?

also can you explain what the .dll's are and what the 1C websight is? i'm sorry, i'm slightly computerly challenged.

thanks again.

thanks for the suggestion, Redleg. i cleaned my fan, uninstalled java and found out that my driver is a 181.22. i tried to play '46 again, and after a while it stalled again. i don't know if an absence of those .dll files would have anything to do with it or not. would you be able to give me a link to where i can find the appropriate .dll files in the 1C websight? i can't find anything of the sort. in fact i don't even know what the 1C sight is about.

also, if i were to download that rivatuner tool, what temperature/setting should i set my fan thing at?

again, i would appreciate any help. thanks

i downloaded rivatuner and up'd the fan speed. it was set at 40% so i turned it up to 70%. it seems to have made a difference. won't be absolutely sure for a few days obviously, but it hasn't crashed on me yet since i reset it. and thats a good thing. i think. confounded technology.

this is a common problem which can be caused by software conflicts, overheating, bad drivers amongst other things. however, it is always reported with the same "nvidia display driver nvdllkm has stopped responding" message. with sli set ups, overheating is the first place to look

Many thanks, i'll try cleaning, fitting another pair of fans in the case (i already have them, so it's worth a try)and re-installing the 180.20 drivers...

i've cranked it up again to 80%. i still get crashes, but it takes about half an hour rather than 5 minutes. so that basically isolates the problem being overheating.

if you want the new Dll's, they are available in the downloads section of this site. just remove the old ones from the il-2 directory (back them up just in case) and place the new ones in. remember when changing to a new driver it is highly advisable to use the driver sweeper program to remove old remnants of the previous driver, or this can cause problems

ok, well i just downloaded and used driver sweeper. i think i just ruined my computer. when it went to clean, i got some error and now my game will not work.

righteo. reinstalled all my drivers again, reinstalled my game and patched and modded it back to the way it was. then i downloaded and installed those new dlls. i've played for about an hour now and no crashes yet, so that may very well have done the trick. i hope.

driver sweeper is completely safe if used correctly. you have to uninstall the display drivers BEFORE running driver sweeper. driver sweeper deletes remnants of old drivers in the registry. this program will not ruin anything if used correctly
