Strange behaviour ingame
#1

First, since going to Vista x64, I haven't ever been able to use ALT+TAB to swap to other programs, as I could with XP Pro. It just drops me to desktop.

Now it has started dropping me out to desktop, as though I pressed ALT+TAB, after I go to change from one map to another in QMB and Single missions, also when a campaign calls a video up, and when a campaign calls for a new map, it does the same thing, too.

When it drops you out, it makes all the noises as if the mission is starting IE engine sound, and the icon is in the taskbar, but you need to press ALT+TAB to get the mouse to focus, then iL2 is gone from taskbar. You then need to reload iL2 again to play another mission. This doesn't happen if you just hit "refly" or change aircraft, but not the map. Same with single missions, you can replay over and over, and other missions so long as the map doesn't change.

Any ideas about this?

Thanks in advance.

That is a strange problem. My advice would be to try a reinstall andsee if that helps... aslo the only other thing I can think of is if you have dual monitors or similar? I've seen some games acting strangely iwth dual monitors when they are both enabled. Hope you get your problem sorted out.

Hi Pirate,

No, don't have dual monitors, also tried a clean install, was OK, so probably a mod I've mucked up, will have to try installing mods one by one when I have time, don't have UI1.1 (too big for me), but on a good note, have now installed Ranwers new ME410 cockpits, they're brilliant, and also got FW-189 cockpit working too! Big Grin

Thanks for your help.

Could you give [CTRL+ESC] a try, as a replacement for [ALT+TAB]?

Sorry I was so long answering, tried that just now, and same thing, it just drops me to desktop, but with the "Start" menu opened. Does that give any ideas? Been trying to figure this out during week, have everything going good except this map changing bit and the ALT+TAB, if I could sort the map bit I could live with that, as I even got the Faireybattle going, which wouldn't a week or so ago, but a later "buttons" file did the trick. Aside from that I can't get UI1,1, too big for dialup, unless I can get my son to d/l and put on dvd, but might wait till next version is out. Thanks for your help.

Since writing the original entry concerning this, I decided to investigate a bit more thoroughly.
I have made a complete reinstall of 4.07 (which is from the dvd 1946), and only updated to 4.08m, this wouldn't start, just showed a spinning cd icon, so I then used the il2fb.exe file from 4.08 to 4.09 switcher (4.33 mb), then ran game with one quick mission (on Okinawa map), then ran a second quick mission on a different map (Crimea), and it crashed to desktop still.
A warning message came up, that the firewall was blocking il2.exe, so I had it changed to unblock. (Had to ALT+TAB between windows, as mouse was absent till I got focus on the alert message).

Apart from this, there are no mods installed, and this didn't always happen to me. I have been updating Vista x64 since I got it, and can only think something has been changed during that time, with the updates. As i said originally, I have never been able to ALT+TAB from iL2, and cannot take screengrabs (noticed someone else had this problem too). The thing I find strange is that noone else seems to have these problems, surely I can't be the only one with Vista x64 copping these issues?

Also just noticed, the 4.07 install just shows the spinning cd icon, and doesn't play, with the dvd in the drive, as well.

Also noticed a lot of missions now freezing up, near end of mission, or when you hit apply, forcing a re-run of mission. Notice that graphics get "jittery" at this time. Memory is 6gb ddr3, so shouldn't be the cause.

First, since going to Vista x64, I haven't ever been able to use ALT+TAB to swap to other programs, while playing iL2 Sturmovik, as it just drops me out to desktop, as though the program had ended, also after I go to change from one map to another in QMB and Single missions, also when a campaign calls a video up, or a new map.

When it drops you out, it makes all the noises as if the mission is starting IE engine sound, and the icon is in the taskbar, but you need to press ALT+TAB to get the mouse to focus, then iL2 is gone from taskbar. You then need to reload iL2 again to play another mission. This doesn't happen if you just hit "refly" or change aircraft, but cannot change the map. Same with single missions, you can replay same mission over and over, and other missions so long as the map doesn't change. This is getting to be very annoying, as you can imagine.

Any ideas about this, and maybe a solution to fix it? My Vista version has been upgraded by Windows Update to latest updates as of 4--5-2009.

Thanks in advance.

Here is content of one of many files that are generated each time you ALT+TAB out of iL2, all versions. they have the name "hs_err_pid1760", each with a unique number, not all 1760.

Turned out this was caused by Catalyst 9.3 driver. 9.6 install fixed all these issues, was found when had difficulty installing DCS:Blackshark, and was because of help on their forum. Hope it saves others some troubles.
