New map: Kt_Viipuri - version 1.0 available!
#1

Hello simmers!
I've been out of mapmaking for a while, enjoying others hard work. Lots of exciting things going on here! Great new maps/textures and new planes....
Anyways! Here is few pictures of my Kt_Viipuri map. It is almost ready for beta. Just few weird things to remove. The reason for making this map is simple. I never did like the Stock Viipuri town. I have been studied scale models of Viipuri and i want to make it more like it was just before Winterwar.
Viipuri is almost like Holy to us Finns! It's now slowly recovering the USSR time, but is still in degradation (did i spell it right?)
My grandmother spend her childhood in Viipuri and ST Petresburg. (She was from Russian jewish family). After revolution she moved to middle part of Finland with my grandfather, who was in Russian army. My grand father returned to Viipuri during Finnish Civil War in white army to fight against reds. My Uncle was in infantry and in ww2 he was hospitalized in Viipuri after he got wounded
(Amazing thing was that he was send to germany for knee operation. If Germans would knew that he was half jewish... He was babtised to Lutherian church though, so they never "modded" his... )
I visited Viipuri once during 90's and i never go back there.
This map will be good for several scenarios: Winterwar, Early summer 41 and Summer 44. And when we will have that ww1 mod even a Finnish Civil war...
This is roughly the area: (It is much bigger for playability reasons)

Hi Fly_ZO m8! I've been busy in RL. so missing that project was actually a good thing!! i graduated to be a chef. It took 3 yrs
I try to finish this map ASAP. During the summer i will go to Lapland and in to The WILD. So no Internet for 1-2 months. Well maybe i take my notebook!! I will also visit Norway and take a cruise with Hurtigruten, Fjordship. I will take heaps of photos and next autumn i will start to make new map...
It's not hard to quess what area that map is covering!!lol
EDIT:
@Fly_Z . Did your neece(?) ever get that Lion KIng thing?

THX agracier!
Well! In Finland during long winter, we have lots of time...
Actually i've made several different villages, farms, factorys and save them as a template . Then just copyed/pasted with small modifications. It takes a lot of time, but i love to listen good music (Spotify online, legal p2p player= almost everything u can imagine)and just place the houses, objects. It is like making scalemodels. Very relaxing (once u learded. The learning curve for mapmaking is steap. as you probably know).
In this map i will try to make every village and farm individual, like they did in beautifull Slovakia map
That is a advantage of small maps! I'm waiting for the Canon UKConfused BOB. I really like the way he uses textures in big maps. My maps are for small campaigns and DFConfused. So i want to make them as detailed as i can. Of course, i had to keep the FPS ratio in mind too Cry
Have u guys tried my KT_ Finland yet. That map is me proud'n'joy! I hope that this will be as good!

Sounds sensible. How do you save them, in which kind of format? I've tried opening up individual missions in the Mission building version of FMB, but that won't work.

Do you save your templates on a blank map or something like that?

You can copy any objects and also group of objects in mapbuilder FMB. But you must assing keys in conf.ini. Backup original conf.ini first. Open conf.ini and add these lines in hotkey builder section:
Ctrl C=copy
Ctrl X=cut
Ctrl V=paste
save and now you can copy/paste.
This is very good for making cityblocks and stuff and you can copy entire airfields too. Saves a lot of time. But you must save/quit/put new actors.static in to the mapmods/maps/xmap every time after copy/paste from another map.
Remember when copying airfields. Don't rotate! Try to find airfield with runways in right direction! IL2 engine is quite clever to find waypoints if they are not excatly right direction. Making airfields in full FMB is the most diffficult part. You have to make every waypoint right. But with copyin excisting airfield you can save days!!
There is another method. You can edit map in notepad. You can make templates in normal FMB and copy/paste static objects from missionfile to mapmods/maps/xmap too. (Xmap is yours map)
You can't copy aircrafts and stuff like that!!

You know that I am a great fan of your work. I have also been real busy in RL, but I hope to do some campaign work both on this map when it comes, and your Finland map!

Great to see you back in action!

Thanks for the notepad info ... sounds a bit daunting when things aren't done visually, but it might be the thing anyway.

But what I would really like to do, and which doesn't seem to work, is to open a mission file, (file extension .mis) and to open that in the map building FMB. Then to copy elements from a mission file to a map in progress.

There are some very well made towns or grouping of buildings in many missions and I thought it would be interesting if they could be copied into a map in progress and be embedded in the map.

I was especially thinking of lowfighter's factory template which is in .mis format.

But it seems that the map building FMB won't allow .mis files to be opened.

@agracier.
Yoou must open .mis file with notepad. But you also need some special tools to paste templates.
(The link is inoperative)
There is some tutorials IIRC. I have only used it once, so i can't remember how does it work
But the simple way to copy/paste straight from map gives you a lot of posibilities too.
Now that i've done so many maps of Finland, i can produce maps much faster tha before! Because i can copy/paste from my previous maps!
OOH and 1 thing more. U can use page up and page down to change highlighted object (yellow) so that helps to avoid too similiar cityblocks or industrial complexes.
