Howdy Everybody,
I have a couple of squad members who have expressed an interest in replacing their old computer system with a faster one....Both play only 1946 and no other "games"...Both like the mods and serving coops...They are both currently using some really old stuff, six plus years old......
What is the best "minimum system" requirement to play 1946 in "excellent mode"???....Processor speed both intel and AMD...Graphics Card (Nvidia) preferred....both will be running XP32....
I currently have for my system an Athlon 6400 X2 Black Edition and EVGA 8800GT superclocked...all running at factory speed and voltage.....I have suggested to them that they reasonably duplicate my system....a processor of at least 3ghz with two cores and a 9800GT card....What, in your opinion is the best advice for an "upgrade"...with only 1946 to be "played" ???
Thank You,
NGW-Sancho....
il2 cant take more than 1 core
it likes more MHZ(GHZ) on the CPU and a better GPU.
Howdy genbrien,
I am aware of the "single core" limitation...run my own with affinty mask 2. I can't tell if there is any difference...It seems the available CPU's are pretty much all dual and quad core...motherboards too....I think I have read that 3 ghz is the minimum desired speed for CPU in 1946? They are not interested in SLI or Crossfire, me either.....I have searched online...Newegg and so forth for components....and am especially confused by the motherboards offered....I barely have an understanding of AM2, AM2+ and AM3 and no understanding of Intel......Not particularly interested in being altogether that informed....just soliciting a recommendation from the members based on their experience and knowledge....So, would a AMD 6000 or 6400 X2 be reasonable? and maybe a GT 9800 or better? A specific make/model motherboard for the above?
Thanx,
NGW-Sancho
depend what u do... even my pc struggle when there is 100 plane when playing a DCG campagn....
Personaly I know nothing about AMD CPU and I fine intel one to be quite dam easy to understand......
I think that, to play with all those MODS + perfect graphic, u should have min 3.5 - 4ghz +GF 260 216core OR ati4870...
I dont know about nvidia, but I know that there's an ATi appication that makes games thake advantage of crossfire even if they dont support it  .
But, I think best thing to do would be to pick up an AMD phenom, and overcloked it to 4ghz
From what I know, and I am by no means an expert - a good 8800 should play IL2 on perfect settings nicely.
The decision between AMD or Intel... well, I just bought a new system to build and I decided on Intel - wether or not that is the right decision I couldn't tell you. Single core processors I think to be out of date now, if Il2 doesn't support multiple processors then it seems that dual core is the way to go.... but that is just my opinion. I'll let other people who know more about the subject help you out there.
Are your friends planning on buying the components and building the system themselves? If so then the only advice I would give is to buy a good motherboard, and a good power supply and researching the hell out of what they are getting. There are plenty of reviews etc. to be found on google.
I enjoy building my own system, but it can be a nightmare. If they aren't interested in learning everything necessary or confident in building it themselves, then I would suggest a pre-built system.
Howdy Pirate...
Yes, it will be a system build for them.....I have pretty much suggested that they "duplicate" my system....3.2 ghz AMD 6400 X2 Black Edition and equal to or better than my 8800GT for graphics...This particular CPU seems to be still available..but very spendy...I think maybe they should get the stock 3.2 ghz one....as mine is not overclocked and handles 1946 with mods just fine in AAA...8800 GT cards are no longer available....and it seems that the 9800 version is the oldest that still is availabe...I am just not sure which one to recommend ? I have never played on a server or off-line with more than 60 aircraft....I do understand that 1946 seems to be more CPU dependent, than graphics....
Anybody have a motherboard suggestion?
Thanx,
NGW-Sancho
Um, I think you will still be able to pick up some 8800s new, at least they are still available here in the UK. I was looking at buying one last week, but decided on an ATI 4850 instead, not as good as Nvidia cards for IL2 but overall a much better card for the same price. Having a brief look at prices for 3.0+ core 2 duo and AMD X2 the prices seem to be similar - at
I dont think ddr3 is affordable for those guys, and they wont see a huge difference for the big price of ddr3........
I got ddr2 1066mhz and I have not seen a big difference between 1066 and 800.
ddr2 cost under 80$ for 4gb............
also, the ram will be bottleneck from the CPU.
best think to do: intel socket 775(like asus p5q or cheaper) 112$
C2D E5200(stock clock 2.5 but can easyly oveclock at 3.5)90$
ATi 4850(or GF9800) 150$-200$
ddr2 ram 4gb(if want cheaper,take 2 gb) 60$
PSU 400-500w 70$
With that you'll get something cheap but can run il2 decently
Howdy,
I much appreciate your ideas....This is for a "High-End" IL-2 1946 machine, only....Perhaps, I should have asked this along these parameters.....What CPU/Video/Motherboard will absolutely run 1946 at the smoothest speeds and highest resolutions allowed by the software in IL-2 1946....without spending any more money than is necessary to accomplish this....using available components and not overclocking?
Minimum CPU speed?
Graphics Card brand and model?
Motherboard?
Hope not to exceed $450 U.S. for the components listed above....I have read, searched and priced components....I just have not remained current with the progress in components in the last year and a half...(since I selected/built my system)
My apologies for not being this direct to begin with....
NGW-Sancho
depend what resolution u want.
Il2 can play many resolution, even multiple screen....
also, u should give a budget.
how many AA do u want to put ????
Howdy again,
Best resolution for 26" HD LCD monitor
One display only
$450.00 for CPU, Motherboard, Graphics card
50 AA (aircraft?)
Will a 3.0 ghz cpu do this for them...will a 9800 GT work well....what mother board works well?
I would like to do all of this without wasting money on speed and excessive graphics that 1946 cannot take advantage of due to Software limitations in the program.....Thank You....
NGW-Sancho
Hi again
Just a note on your budget, you will have to include RAM and a PSU as well. You should be looking at 500w+ PSUs from a reputable manufacturer, a 6 year old PSU isnt likely to have the power connector for the CPU or the PCI-e connector for the graphics card or enough wattage - I was in the same position, with an old system there really isn't anything aside from the hard drive and optical drives which will be compatible with the latest motherboards - And most modern motherboards will be either DDR2, or DDR3 neither of which will take the older RAM I imagine will be in their current systems - DDR400 PC3200 or lower?
I have never owned a 8800, wether or not it will run well with such a large resolution I couldn't say, my old system is a 6800 with a resolution of 1440x900 and it works nicely on 4.08 with excellent graphics and not so nicely on 4.09. There is a guy on these forums called bigsilverhotdog who clearly knows alot about modern systems and graphics cards - it may well be worth contacting him maybe via a PM and asking him what would be suitable.
3.0Ghz seems to be about the speed you should be looking for - the E8400 would give you that without overclocking, but it'll cost you... that said I have only looked at UK prices. I should be able to acheive 3.0Ghz with the E5200 I am ordering... and that is a great deal less.
Hope I have been at least somewhat useful. I will be happy to help out if there is anything you need....
