To _tex or not to _Tex that os the (Mapmod) question?
#1

Ok I admit it I am a slow learner & have had more than my fair share of Mapmod questiions, answers & problems in the past year or so....Everytime I think I ubderstand what the heck I'm doing I either make some new mistake or find something I never saw before...thank goodness for constant back-up even when it saves corrupted folders & files !
Anyway while trying to get Korea & Aleutian Maps to work with FMB I found the importance of tracking down the _ tex /land/Summer files & finding unopened folders that needed to be added to the Summer folder( it got the Korea maps up & running...still trying to figure out why Aluetians don't work...) While doing this I found I had 2 _Tex folders-one inside Mapmods folder:with a smal"t" & one inside maps folder with a large "T" ( see below..) I assume both are necessary, but they seem to share many of the same folders with much of the same contents...is this correct? If not in the constant battle to keep folders & repeats at a minimum what should I do?
Also I notice "cloud "files are just sort of drifting around in both "tex " folders...where should they actually be grouped?
Finally I have one sad & loney "Slot" folder containing one file titled "copra" i asume this belongs( the file not the folder) in "Summer" but I guess it could go in" Pacific",huh?
It's hard to tell without a score card!
Many thanks for your patience...hope some brighter bulb than I will come up with an answer that I can make sense of & doesn't Crash the game!

... there are two ways for submitting new(custom) textures allowed at AAA :

1 all modded tga's must have author's prefix and can be placed anywhere in _Tex ( _Tex\land\... )

2 all modded tga's are placed into new folder ( author's prefix in folder name ) inside _Tex ( _Tex\Slot\...) ... author's prefix in file names optional

It really doesn't matter where files are ( as long as they are in _Tex ) if path for certain texture file has proper entry in certain map's load.ini ( path + filename)

I prefer having custom textures ( like Compans pack .... ) placed in new folder ( _Tex\Compans\) and edited load.ini's accordingly ... it's easier to track them down

Of course i'm not editing those which come with modded maps cos of compatibility issues ( future updates ...)

clouds and other similar files should be left in _Tex root directory cos of game structure

hope this explains it ...

For the Aleutians map, the textures, which are all contained in the folder called 'agracier' should go here:

...MODS/mapmods/maps/_Tex/land/summer/agracier/

They are all grouped into one distinct folder, to make it easy to find them and to (un-)install them.

You'll notice in the screenshot below, that several other mapmakers have done the same with their textures:

Ok maybe I wasn't clear enough..I have two different tex folders as seen above - do I need two? Can i simply paste one into the other ?
Maybe this will help- if I take both paths down to /summer this is what appears:
1.)
2.)

As you can see they are different at this point & one includes the folders for Korea etc. the other does not.I think what you are saying is do not "unpack the various folders but leave them intact, yes?
But neither of you has told me what to do with these two tex folders...leave them alone ? copy & paste or do away entirely with one? I've tried various solutuions myself & find that I disable new maps or can even get a CTD....
What to do - what to do?

I had no idea that you could even have two directories with the exact same name and path, except for a difference between a capital and an undercase letter.

I would have thought that 'MODS ..../_Tex' ... and 'MODS .../_tex' ....

would be recognized as the same directory.

So you've got me there.

You can always make a copy of your entire game, and see what happens when you either combine the directories or delete one ... no harm done if you keep a working copy safe and use another to experiment on ...

JD,
You only need one so I'd combine them to your ....mods/mapmods/maps/_Tex folder, here's a screenie of my _Tex structure for reference;

@agracier, they're not same path (close to it but not quite) one is mapmods/_tex and the other mapmods/maps/_Tex

Cheers
