I have the Nvidia 8800GTS 512 graphics card & was thinking of putting it into my wifes computer.
I have looked at different nvidia cards until I'm blue in the face & can't really tell which one would actually be an upgrade.
My main game is Il2 with an occasional Cod or some other ww2 type shooter game
every cards advertizing says it is the best thing since popcorn, but which ones are actually a good replacement for the 8800gts?
I am leaning to the nvidia 260, but can't be sure that it is that good.
thanks for your input...
A gt260 would be a big upgade over an 8800, and they are reltively cheap now.
In using the comparison tool on the Nvidia site I see that the 275 pce cards specs are quite a bit better then my 8800gts 512.
The next problem is that there are about a dozen different brands to pick from and the prices are very different from one to the other.
I can't seem to find any information regarding those different card builders as to which ones are better to stay away from.
I know that there must be one or two that are heads above the others in quality...
Any ideas there?
EVGA is preferred, as it has a lifetime warranty. That makes it the number 1 choice in my book, together with it's quality.
The order of which manufacturer makes a better product changes over time, but here are some reputable ones:
XFX and Leadtek (WinFast). Motherboard manufacturers also make good ones: Asus, MSI and Gigabyte.
S!
I use MSI 280GTX, it was OC'd at factory too. Been happy with it, so can not complain about MSI quality at all.
Well, I ran across a EVGA GTX 280 at New Egg that was just ten bucks more then the GTX 275 so I ordered it.
I don't know how much better it will be with il2 then my 8800GTS, but if it will get rid of those damn white ants that run along the shorelines & some of the movement along the rivers I'll be happy.
I can put the 8800 in my wifes computer, she doesn't game so it will be just dandy...
Thanks for your input guys...
Yeah, I don't know what brand this case is, but I have very good airflow through-out the case...ha ha..it's like a small windstorm coming out the back of the case.
I'm in the Phoenix, Arizona area, and heat is a big problem so I have a fan system that blows air through-out the room and out the door into the hallway. otherwise I would just roast in here. Man, that computer really puts out the bpu's. In the winter it's fine, but summer can be a bitch...lol..
This evga gts 280 is not the OC'ed model so perhaps it will not be as loud as yours.
heck, it is loud already. I can't hear it, but my wife makes comments every so often that she can hear the fans way in the next room.
Damn...I feel like a kid (69) waiting for a new toy...Wish New Egg would hurry up...lol
I use the 178.13 drivers with 1280 x 960.
After several weeks of testing I finely settled on them because of my old eyes.
I can see ground objects at a far enough distance away to make a nice planned attack & keep them insight all the way.
Aircraft show up as a black dot far enough away to where I can make a plan. They stay insight all the way without that disappearing act just as they are about to fire.
I hope this new cards will make the insight distance a bit further away and a better view of the other aircraft...Just have to wait & see..lol..
S!
The dots have been a problem for me always, they just seem to disappear at certain distances and suddenly I have a plane with blazing guns close to me. Quite frustrating sometimes. I have a 24" screen so I have to use bigger resolution, could try go down a few steps though.
When you get the system up and running could you share the settings with me? Would be very much appreciated.
actually go back & forth between 1024 x 768 & 1280 x 960 depending on my mood...
I will post my settings when I finely get it up & running..
Thanks for your time & info...
With the 178.13 drivers on a head to head when the aircraft re-renders at 1.0 it doesn't seem to completely disappear....It is very fast & I can actually keep it in sight...
i recieved my GTX 280 yesterday afternoon & installed it when I got home from work at midnight.
I tried the older 8800 GTS 178.13 drivers, but that just didn't work well. I called the EFGA tech & they told me that the card would work better with the newer drivers so I did the EVGA p[rocedure for uninstall & driver cleaner in safe mode & then put the 185.85's in.
They seem to be working well. I have everything inl the EVGA control panel maxed out & seem to have fair views on aircraft & ground objects.
I need to do a coupla days messing with this & then I'll post what I came up with...
My initial take is that it is definately a better card, but I am still seeing ants running around on the Crimea map & the P38 cockpit is still unreadable in normal view..It just shimmers to beat hell. I think it is an aircraft design problem...
