I know I wouldn't mind having one. My squad is currently working on a Sinai desert campaign with Egypt v Isreal and Israel flew Meteors during that time frame. I have to bubstitute F-84s and Sabres right now as fill and AFAIK, Isreal never flew either of those acft.
I'll bump this. I hope someone is still working on it. It had a heavy role to play in WW2, as well as afterwards.
Certainly used in WWII, but it certainly didn't have much of a 'heavy' role..
The Meteor had very little impact on chasing down V1's.. They accounted for only 14 out of the many that were shot down or destroyed by conventional prop aircraft of the time.
After the V2 was introduced and with no interception techniques available to the RAF, they were kept back in the UK and were not allowed to cross over the channel into German controled airspace until 1945..
The Meteor finished the war shortly after, having been used in the armed recce and ground attack role.. They never met any of the Luftwaffe jets in combat, but accounted for 46 enemy aircraft when employed in the ground attack role.. it was deemed their main threat was from 'allied' aircraft as they were often mis-identified as 262's..lol!
Well, at least Meteor might be useful for RAF 'what-if' campaigns. After all, WWII Jet vs. Jet combat should not just between the YP-80 and the Russian and German jets in the game.
Ah, now hold on just a second there... The Meteor F Mk. I was used for chasing down V-1's which barely counts as combat. However, the Meteor F Mk. III got into a fight with some Fw 190's early in 1945. They still wore the all white paint and the combat is disputed, but more than likely, it actually happened which is more then you can say for the YP-80A which was only sent into the combat area. The Meteor F Mk. 8 was used in Korea by the RAAF for ground attack, but still managed to score three Mig kills.
The Meteor was the first and only allied jet to see OPERATIONAL service in WW11. The YP-80 benefited from British research into the jet engine. Nuff said.
I agree, Meteor is that one I'm still missing in that game.
Wrong... The Meteor was the only Allied jet to see actual combat. The YP-80A was sent into opperational service in Italy with the 1st Fighter Group in December of 1944. It was sent towards the front lines in an attempt at combat, but did not get into any.
good for korea as they were flown there by the raaf, maybe jolly can give
us an update now he is back
