[Download] BurmaLower V2.1
#1

cztx_BurmaLower version 2.1 is now ready for download here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/lmnyunmnt ... erV2.1.zip

Please let me know if there are any glaring problems

(if you don't have the UP2.0 or HSFX then you might need to install KevinP's Road/Rail plates MOD. This MOD has the curved railroad tracks and I experimented some in this map with them).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After taking a break from map making I decided to go back and improve cztx_BurmaLower.

Version 2 improvements:
1. A more dry look with Agracier's textures. Most combat in Burma took place during non-monsoon periods which were very dry and dusty with desert-like conditions.
2. Use of new textures. Inspired from ideas from MrOblongo.
3. Corrected errors in roads/railroads.
4. Added Delvpier's Mods Bridges to almost all river crossings (except where ferries used).
5. Smoothed rivers to have a more natural look.
6. Eliminated the burmafield/rice paddies texture and replaced with a dry scrub brush texture.
7. Improved ed_maps for better in-flight geographical navigation references.
8. Added a couple new airfields and changed some airfields waypoints for some others.
9. More buildings populated in cities/villages.
10. Eliminated surf on beaches.
11. Included an extra Map_T file as an option. One has more jungle area south of Rangoon, around Bassein, Akyab area, and Ramree area. The option: "Map_T_Dry" does not have these jungle areas but has dry/desert looking textures instead.

CT - are there any airfields on your map where RAF Beaufighters or P-47's were based?

Yes, order of battle for June 1943 has Beufighters at Agartala and December at Feni. OOB July 1944 @ Chiringa.

RAF Thunderbolts OOB December 1944 were at Jumchar and Ratnap near Chittagong and Chiringa.
These mainly were on escort missions to Rangoon and Meiktila area.
They took part in the 1945 offensive through central Burma but I'm not sure if they were based around Mandalay area as airfields were occupied, north to south.
I started making a couple missions with Thunderbolts in this area just to see what it would be like. I'm not a fan of these heavy fighters but it'd be great if you could make a campaign with it.

If you need more info about squadrons and dates send a PM. Love your campaigns!

Cool! Now maybe we'll be able to see John Rambo on the ground! Where in Burma did he live already? :-)

Great to see your back in business. This a great theater of operation and deserves a great map.

About some missing airfields...this is a little extract from the 64 Sentai Book of Kagero:

"February 12 (1943) saw the loss of another unit commander. Seven Hayabusas led by Maj. Yagi escorted three Ki48 that bombed ammunition depots right across the frontline. When bombers had been escorted back the Hayabusas headed for Kyautaw airfield with the intention of attacking the aircraft that were parked there. Two Mohawks from No. 5 Sqn. were noticed flying..."

This account cleary show the existence of a field in Kyautaw that is missing in the map. Big Grin

And a Railyard is missing in Apalon. The book "Down in the Drink" describes an attack carried out by 4 Mosquito bombers that took of from Kinmagan Strip (just south of Myingyan field in the junction of Irrawady and Chindwin Rivers and flew all the way to Apalon. "The target was the railyard station and sidings at Apalon, five hundred miles to the south, two hours flying in a Mosquito. Apalon was on the Moulmein-Bangkok railway near Amherst, fify miles touth of Moulmein, in the narrow coastal strip of lower Burma that borders on Siam". (Barker: 62)

Just adding more cents to this.
Keep the great work!

Hi CT

Our small squad has had great fun with your map using it for DF based on RL events.

A while ago, I posted this concerning spawning at Mingaladon:- (last post on P7)

http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/...0&start=90

If you have time to look at this issue we would be indebted to you!

The guys over at UP2 accept map upgrades frequently to cover issues like this and I'm sure would like to include your new upgrade in the next patch.

Many thanks for producing such a great map.

Cheers CT - I've been thinking about campaigns for these planes on your map for a while now, though I'll wait till you've finished your update.

I'll do a bit more of my own research, then PM you for specifics, if that's OK......

And a Railyard is missing in Apalon. !
This same quote is in the book Air War for Burma. Apparently the name Kyauktaw is misspelled. After much searching I found the exact location of Kyauktaw. It is on the sharp bend of the Kaladan River well east of Maungdaw area. It must have been a remote airfield and not much used because this is the only mention of it in the book (unless it had an RAF code name and these are hard to pinpoint). Nevertheless I will add a small field there.

I'll also add Apalon. There are probably at least a hundred more RR towns and targets I could add but that's alot of work. If you can give me more names and locations then I can add them also. Locating them on a map is the most time consuming thing. It would help if these were highlighted on a map.

PacificAirfields.com has a list of235 matches for airfields in Burma. Obviously I will only add a portion of that. Since the earlier map version I have learned some more about them. Some fields can go by two names, Allied name and JAAF name. Example: Maymo is also Anisakan to RAF.
Aungban airfield, west of Heho, will be added.
A couple fields will be deleted; like at Monywa (which is apparently actually located at Alon - already on map.)
Possibly deleting the smaller airfields on the road to Magwe northwest of Rangoon.
Will delete Toungoo South because it was most likely used in the late stages of the war and would not look right for the Flying Tigers era.

If anyone has anymore info to add let me know, thanks!

I'm not really sure how dogfight spawning works because I never do it but I'll look into it. If anyone knows how to correct this problem let me know so I can fix it.

Please don't do that. These small auxilliary airfields were extensively used during the evacuation of Rangoon in '42 and again in '44 in the counterattack. We can always turn them off (display) with MDS options when we don't need them. Besides, they aren't that much overhead on the AS file.

Can you post a screen shot to show where and what happens when you spawn?
This would help alot.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm about finished. All that needs to be done is the above problem.
Made some minor changes in roads and railroads which you probably won't even notice haha. Reworked the textures so now they blend more nicely IMHO. Got rid of the unnatural lines of textures along roads/RR. Added Kyauktaw Airfield, reworked Monywa Airfield (runway and taxi points have all changed).

Experimented with the new railroad plates and added some curved turns at Apalon and Heho.
(is this mod included with the new UP2 and HSFx?). Anyway, if you don't have this mod then it may cause saving problems.

On the briefing map (ed_maps) you may notice a small white mark for bridges and gray marks for ferry crossings. This will help you located targets easier. Hmm what else?

May postpone V2 release as I might include a new campaign with it and waiting for the SPAWN fix.
