Would anyone be able to give a very confused soul some help on networks?

I've had a sort of successful network, up till now. Usually I could share files through a LAN, also used to be able to run UDSpeed instruments between the 2 computers.

Also could connect to the internet from both at same time, (but this always seemed to stuff up the LAN connection for some reason, or vice versa (IE the LAN worked, but then couldn't connect to internet)..

I have my modem on my older computer, and connected through it if I wanted the internet on my newer computer, which was not often, mainly for updating Vista, and Anti virus etc. Downloads I'd do on the old computer, then transfer them through the LAN connection.

All was good, but now for some reason, all has stopped, and that bloody MS Network and Sharing Centre doesn't help at all. Run it, try repair etc, never can resolve anything, but always when I reboot or turn on the other computer, it shows as being
connected at 100bps.

Anyone with an EASY, Foolproof way to set up my systems' network, I would appreciate your help.
