How exactly is this a 'secret'? It is common knowledge to anyone familiar with the details of WWII, and you found it on Wikipedia.

It was an action of possibly dubious legality, and probably dubious morality, but you could say this about a great many things the Allies did during WWII. I see nothing particularly 'dark' in this particular episode though. Do you have any particular reason for suggesting otherwise, or are you just trying to start an argument?

I see something dark about it, as most all Frenchmen do. It is no big news to us, but the Hood did got a taste of it's own medicine later on...call it fate.
The french were attacked in Syria and defended bitterly. Were invaded in Lebanon as well. Not well known is that they defended Madagascar the same,
and I think were attacked but repulse the attack successfully in Senegal. ( See the battle of Dakar and the story of the Richelieu battleship ).
On this occasion the air-forces base in North West Africa and Morocco retaliated by bombing Gibraltar ! ( reports vary on the results ) .
And finally was the well publicized Torch invasion of north Africa by the Americans.
By the time southern France was invaded by Axis, almost all french had switched side to join the allies.
I'm glad that people of today are learning about history and call it what they want. We falsely assume that what we know,
because we lived closer to it, or are better informed, is common knowledge to everyone, but that is not the case.
So let the younger, newer generations be surprised and don't ask them to muzzle up if they want to talk about it (so few been interested to start with...).
