Rise of Flight Limitations
#1

Well I finally did it..

I dl RoF and installed it..

First glance it is a dream graphics wise..

But upon closer inspection..

The distances that the aircraft appear is very limited..

There seems to be only one LOD..

There is no transition from detailed 3D artwork to 'blob' to 'dot'

That is to saw you will NOT see aircraft off in the distance like you do IL2..

They suddenly appear at very close range and pop into view as if they just had Scotty beam them in..

So hurry up CK!

Cuz RoF is not the WWI we have all been waiting for! Wink

Rise of Flight rocks! These minor issues like not being able to see that far, no aldis gunsight on the SE5a, better career mode, et al. are on the list to be fixed. The devs for RoF have been working hard to provide as much as they can with what little resources they have. Once again as reminder, this game is just over a year old, give it a chance. Personally it's my favorite. I've been with RoF almost since it came out last year. You should have seen it then it was a bit of a mess. I'm excited for CK, as well. These sweeping generalizations about a sim or the very small company without actually investing time in the game and the support forums eventually leads exactly to a newborn sims death. There's so much more to RoF than the minor issues so many people complain about. Many of us on the RoF forums have complained about this or that about the sim, and the devs have listened and have changed many things. It gets better, and better... Big Grin

To each his own I guess..

Don't get me wrong there is a lot of good things about RoF..

I am still playing it if that says anything..

But you have to get the 'basics' right for a flight sim to be really good..

And the distance at which you can see aircraft is very high on the list of basics..

Long story short..

With the current distances RoF is a great shoot-em-up WWI flight sim..

But it is not a good WWI flight sim..

In that due to the distance limitation you can not apply realistic SA tactics which in turn means you can not simulate 'historic' tactics..

WillyVonWonka Wrote:These minor issues like not being able to see that far
Far from minor IMHO..

See above

WillyVonWonka Wrote:are on the list to be fixed.
What list?

Because when I posted this in the RoF forums none of the users or moderators said this was something they said they plan on fixing..

All I got was 'the fix' is to 'zoom' in..

Which is not a fix..

It is a way to try and mitigate the problem..

Again don't get me wrong!

I hope your right..

But unless you can provide a link to one of the RoF staff stating such I will have to put this statement by you wrt to the distance limitations being fixxed as a unfounded rumor

WillyVonWonka Wrote:The devs for RoF have been working hard to provide as much as they can with what little resources they have.
little resources?

I just shelled out..

$39.00 for RoF basic
$12.00 for bundle A (Nieuport 28 & Albatros D.Va)
$12.00 for bundle B (Sopwith Camel & Fokker Dr.I)
$12.00 for bundle C (Nieuport 17.C1 & Albatros D.III)
$12.00 for bundle D (Sopwith Dolphin & Pfalz D.XII)
$ 7.62 for Airco D.H.2
$ 7.62 for SPAD 12.C1
$ 7.62 for Fokker D.VII
$ 7.62 for S.E.A 5a
$ 7.62 for Pfalz D.IIIa
$ 7.62 for Pfalz D.XII
$ 7.62 for Fokker Dr.I
$ 7.62 for Fokker D.VIII
$ 7.62 for Fokker D.VIIF
----------------------------
$155.58 total

So I don't buy into the idea that they have limited resources

WillyVonWonka Wrote:Once again as reminder, this game is just over a year old, give it a chance.
Just to be clear..

My statement wrt RoF is relative to it's current state..

As for it's future and what it 'might' be someday..

I have no statements on what 'might' be..

Why?

Because over the past 20 some odd years of flight simming I have seen alot of promises made by flight sim makers never panned out..

So Ill stick with commenting on what it is and not what it might be..

WillyVonWonka Wrote:These sweeping generalizations about a sim or the very small company without actually investing time in the game and the support forums eventually leads exactly to a newborn sims death.
Well than it is a good thing for RoF that I made no sweeping generalizations about the sim!

My statement was very specific..

And it is a good thing for RoF that I did post in their support forums wrt this topic before I made my statement here in this forum..

That is to say sweeping generalizations are as bad as someone assuming something.. Wink

WillyVonWonka Wrote:There's so much more to RoF than the minor issues so many people complain about.
Again..

What I described is not a minor issue..

How well a wagon wheel is modled on a wagon rolling down the road in a flight sim is a minor issue..

Having planes suddenly appear behind you as if Scotty himself beamed them in in a flight sim is a major issue..

WillyVonWonka Wrote:Many of us on the RoF forums have complained about this or that about the sim, and the devs have listened and have changed many things. It gets better, and better... Big Grin
Again..

Never said the RoF guys were not responsive or that no improvements have been made to RoF..

That is to be EXPECTED..

So I don't really hold that up as an example of them going above and beyond the call of duty..

My point is simple..

This 'limitation' in RoF is what I consider to be a basic requirement for any flight sim..

Which in turn makes it a major issue..

Is that to say the sim is worthless?

No..

As noted above it is a fun shoot-em-up quake like WWI era flight sim..

But due to the distance limitation you can not apply realistic SA tatics which in turn means you can not simulate 'historic' tatics'

A real immersion killer that also limits how realistic the sim can be

For roughly the same price, you could have got RoF ICE with many of those planes included Wink

No one is saying these aren't limitations, but they won't change overnight. just have patience, just like people had with Il-2 and still have today Wink

That is what I heard 'after' I bought RoF from some of the guys flying RoF online.. But as far as I understand it is still the same sim.. Just got bought out by 777 from neoqb.. Right? I mean RoF and RoF ICE users all fly in the same servers.. Right?

philip.ed Wrote:No one is saying these aren't limitations,
True all agree it is a limitation..

Just some consider it minor and some consider it major Wink

philip.ed Wrote:but they won't change overnight. just have patience, just like people had with Il-2 and still have today Wink
Again..

From what I was told in the RoF forums there are no plane to fix it..

As far as I can tell they consider the zoom the fix..

I hope I am wrong and someone can provide a link to a 777 or neoqb persons saying they do plane on fixing it

I'm a huge WW-1 Aviation Fan & was first on my block to buy RoF & all the aircraft to go with it and am very patient...all the changes have helped and I will stick with it..but really i've been spoiled since Day 1 with Il-2...I kind of expected all sims would reach the market with the same degree of finish that Il-2 originally did & then got polished since.The clarity of install, ease of making sense of controls QMB & FMB,Campaigns, skins , controls,dowmloads patches etc..For a computer idiot like me to get it...well Oleg did a lot right ( lets not get into Pacific Fighters...) AND flight is/was smooth & works with Track IR like they were made for each other. RoF was a labor of love for the designers , but/and you have to really love it to get thru these growing pains,with its gliches in primary download,FMs ,not to mention difficulty in navigating thru its various features,controls, missions ,loading times etc.
I'm still struggling thru its flight characteristics ( I can't explain it but it seems twtchy somehow & I'm not talking about the planes exactly or FPS but something I can't explain...)& how it operates with Track IR ( and yes I am used to gunsight view in Il2...no such thing in RoF...hopefully that will be added.) I find myself drawn back to Il-2 even with an up-to-date working install of RoF...
Did I mention it is very pretty too?
So I'll keep with it & keep up with the upgrades...it will get better...but with SoW ( perhaps right around the corner...) I still don't know how much I'll actually fly it...
My big worry SoW will have the same problems...I can only hope Oleg has spent these last 4-5 years since it was announced making sure that doesn't happen.
p.s. Another reason I come back to Il-2 is because of the brilliant mods by third party guys...the old game still rocks!

Some issues in RoF are in the list to get done because the hardcore RoFers have pushed the devs to it, the windsock issue for example. We have a working windsock! Big Grin And others are from the list of people(usually the same hardcore folks) on the forum pushing to change what, to some, doesn't work for them to what will work for them by promoting an issue that the devs will notice. ACE I feel your pain and see your point of view, as well. To each his own, I say, and let me qualify myself by saying IL-2 1946 HSFX/UP2, and 3rd party mods in general rock, too! Now, imho, Rise of Flight has the same potential as IL-2 to reach the high pinnacle of sim-dom. I'm with philip.ed that we need patience and vigilance with the devs to get what many of us would love, another jewel in the very small patch of sims.

Moreover, neoqb/777 are a very small company of dedicated WWI enthusiasts and some funds their way helps them to make a better sim. Your voice backed by a donation is much more potent than those who don't but complain it's not perfect, or simply not good enough(just a statement, I assume you already know this). Honestly, it's not like there's a lot of sims to choose from in such a minuscule niche market. I support IL-2, WoP, RoF, OFF, DCS: Blackshark, FC2, et al. I would like them all to succeed. They're in there own unique way a testament to the survival of us who love and enjoy the beauty of flight, and the deadly struggle of aerial combat in the virtual skies. In total, for me at least, they're all equal in different ways, as a reiteration.

Lastly, to Dietz, I feel more challenged by the FM in RoF than I do in IL-2. Rise of Flight, especially my beloved Camel, gives me a smooth but difficult ride, with respect and my opinion only, I think the aircraft in RoF are just right but with only some minor complaints. Love your art, great picture! Respect to all.... Big Grin

RoF ICE is exactly the same as RoF; it just includes some more planes and some new features (which are available in patches) IIRC. They are both compatible with one another Wink

I don't find any such view limitation in ROF. Using 1920x1080 res or above, you should see normal viewing distance. I can see enemy planes well enough in time to turn and decide my attack plan. This sim was not designed for low res, low power machines. I run it at 1920x1200, and at all max settings. You need to use trackir, and I wouldn't suggest less than trackir5 for it. You need the fast response. As for zoom, yes, it can help a newbie learn how to find an ememy at first, but you will wean yourself off zoom after awhile. You did not have binoculars to see planes, you only had eyes. I am running this full time now with my AB1 squad until CK comes out. Come fly with us! We hope to fly both.

Hi Willy!

I know my replys can be long winded and thus I don't expect everyone to read everything in them..

So you might have missed my question to you, with regarrds to the distance at which planes appear, to which you replied, i.e.

WillyVonWonka Wrote:are on the list to be fixed.

After which I ask for a link to where a neoqb/777 reprsentitive said the distance at which planes will appear is on 'this' list or a link to 'this' list your refering to..

Because to me this is a big deal and if the neoqb/777 guys have offically said they plane on fixing it than I will be one happy camper..

Been in this flight sim game going on 20+ years now so I know all too well about being patient..

Once the sim makers said they are working on it..

Until than I shall keep ringing the bell! Wink

Your loss not mine!

RoF is a great sim..

It aint perfect but it is the best WWI sim I have seen in years..

Graphics wise it is the best looking sim I have ever seen..

If they fix the distance at which planes appear I will be spending alot more time flying RoF than I am now
