IL2 1946 and Windows 7 doesn't want to start
#1

I installed IL2 in the x86 folder and it didn't work. Using advice from this website I uninstalled from there and reinstalled in it's own Ubisoft folder. It seems to have installed OK (all the files are there). I can't get it to run however. I've tried WinXP compatibility mode, I've tried running as Administrator but no joy.

I'm running Windows 7 and this is practically the only program on the new machine at the moment. As with the usual irony and anything MS, IL2 worked fine on my old system (Win XP SP3) until I fried the mobo.

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do not install it into the program files. I installed it into my C:\Games\Il-2 folder.

It runs OK in Win 7 for me, but it takes a much longer time to begin loading after I click on the icon than it did in Vista.

Hi,
Here is a description from a guy what he did to solve the problem:http://forums.oesau.jg1.org/viewtopic.php?t=18428

My i7 install was outside program files: C\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946
this is a without Ubisoft file for shortest paths possible.
It worked fine from the start in may 2010, and until now. Never had any problem with it.

I must have used windows XP sp2 compatibility. never tried or trusted sp3.
Back in my XP days, my old joysticks being rejected, I used sp2 + custom updates instead.

Still no joy. I get to the 5% spot on the splash screen and drops back to desktop. I did note that the version is 4.09m which I guess is a good thing. It's still checking for the DVD (i.e. I get the spinning DVD icon) which I don't understand as I seem to remember 4.09m was a no-CD patch (or perhaps my memory's screwed up). Anyway, most frustrating as SH4 and FSX work fine and are very impressive graphics-wise and performance-wise. It's just seems to be good old IL2. This is my 3rd install and it's sitting in C:\Games\Il2 Sturmovik 1946\ folder.
Currently I'm stumped.

For 5% error, according to SAS:
Quote:5% crash on loading indicates

~You just upgraded Il2. During this you missed an SFS file Somewhere. Go back and repeat.

~You just installed a mod enabler. Then , also you might have missed an SFS file (could happen with some enablers) or, your copy of IL2 is a direct to drive copy bought over the internet. That means One of your SFS files and some of your dlls are spiked by UBI. The fix for this is here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1531.0.html

~Somehow your soundsetting is something other than 44.1KHz, and this is somehow screwing everything else. I personally have never been able to reproduce this crash. But know about it anyway, Access your sound settings through the IL2Setup.exe , or IL2SET.exe in your game folder. This seems to apply only to old UI installations anyway. One of those "funny little spies" Big Grin

~You did nothing and now there is a 5% crash. One of your SFS files somehow got lost or corrupted. Count them and replace them if needed. Copy all SFS files over from a backup of your game

If you can, you install it on another pc with Windows XP and copy the entire il2 folder on your pc.

Hello, tomoose

The 5% crash can indicate a missing, incorrect, or misplaced patch of IL-2. Also, some people have an older sound card which causes the issue, though it seems that you would not have an older sound card. Is that correct?

The most likely cause of the 5% crash in your case is a missing patch or a Windows 7 issue against IL-2.

It sounds as though you have experience with computers, but please allow me to cover basics that must be done.

What we know:

Windows 7 is being used by IL-2 fans with no problem.

Making IL-2 a major folder in a disk is the right choice.

Install IL-2 into a User Account with Administration status.

IL-2 is an XP program. Use Compatibility Mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2 if any problems arise.

All downloads should be scanned for malware and tested for corrupt files.

Add-ons (patches) of IL-2 must be installed in the correct order.

I have a couple guides which are relavent to this because there are some things which are explained in them which must be done to insure that IL-2 runs.

Did you patch 4.08m before 4.09m?

Gents;
it was indeed the patching method............d'oh!! I had assumed that the 4.09m patch added any 4.08m requirements also...........apparently not.
For anyone else out there that's having Windows 7 issues, here's what worked for me:

1. A complete uninstall of the offending IL2 (I used Revo Uninstaller just to be sure).
2. Install IL2 as per normal from the DVD. I installed to the Program Files (x86) folder. I had previously tried a Games folder or just an Ubisoft folder so I don't believe the Program FIles (x86) folder is the problem in other cases.
3. Install Patch 4.08m
4. Install Patch 4.09m
5. Run the SECUROM software and update the game as directed.
6. Start game and enjoy.

My only problem now is that the game is STILL looking for the DVD ergo I still need the DVD in the drive. The other problem is that I have to select an Nvidia card in setup as my ATI Radeon if selected gives me black screen everywhere outside the aircraft (which looks bizarre BTW, LOL). I have a Radeon HP 5770 PCIe card which is obviously not on the list in setup, if someone can suggest a Radeon equivalent etc I'd appreciate it.

Thanks to all who responded with suggestions and links it is most appreciated.

tomoose,

Simply select the latest version on the list of the IL-2 Setup. The Compatiblity Mode and the latest graphics driver will take care of the loose ends.

The DVD version is your base, so you must have the disk in the slot when using IL-2.

Your HD 5770 can use the 10.7 or later graphics card driver:

Yes, well, installation of ANY modpack, HSFX, UP, SAS, will eliminate the need for having the DVD in the drive.
