Hey everyone,
I just got the HSFX on my computer not to long ago and I like to fly Navy maps a lot.
What is going on now when you start your engine and you get the messages about "engine under heat" and then it seems if you don't take off right away your engine is killed and is unrecoverable. This may happen with land based take offs, but I haven't done any yet. The only way to take off is to put it in auto pilot or to take off first and right away, which is impossible if you are not the #1 A/C in the group.
I've tried everything to see what is done to the engine in Autopilot mode to prevent this but I don't see any special switch turned on.
And last night I just learned of planes catapulting off the deck. I was unable to initiate this myself since when I start my engine it gives me the underheat message and dies.
So how do you prevent your engine from being destroyed on startup, and how do I get my A/C on the catapult?
Also, does the catapult solve heavy load issues? Like an F4U loaded with 4000lbs of ordinance and 100% fuel, or the F9F carrier take off ability?
Thanks everyone.
in JSGME, disable advanced engine management
Is this a bug, or are there engine management things I should be doing on start up?

Again, are you bumpin' this thread or are you trying to get respect with post count?
Some people may think that your post is pointless, but I just might be an outsider.
Most of us use UP 2.1 too, no complications....
OK. It sounds like you have advanced engine management enabled. This means that if you throttle up before your oil temperature reaches a certain point, you will damage the engine. This is not a bug, it is in fact something that will happen in real life, although in many cases, at least with US aircraft, the crew chief would have already "run up" the engine before the pilot jumped into the cockpit.
If it bugs you, disable it in JSGME.
To get onto the catapult, after your engine is warm, carefully taxi to within a couple of feet of the catapult. Then set your chocks. If you've done it properly, your plane will "jump" into position on the cat. Run the throttle up, set flaps and trim for takeoff and hit "chocks" again to launch.
As far as what loadouts will work, you're probably going to have to experiment.
Hey thanks man!
The first guy's fix worked too, but I imagine it just disabled something that I wanted, which you confirmed.
Is there a source for the complex engine management so I could see all the little things I need to do with the engines?

I had a problem with the engine getting damaged when starting it up while on a flight deck. I would damage the engine even if the magnetoes were both on, radiator flaps full open, throttle retarded to zero and propeller control/prop pitch retarded to zero. I asked about the problem an got the following explanation:
Once the engine was started, right away hit chocks release and then chocks in, then let the engine idle. This prevents you from damaging the engine on start up when spawning on a carrier.
This worked every time after that.
When I looked over the read me file I couldn't recall ever seeing this explained for a carrier spawn. I had to ask someone that had used the mod. I myself have this mod disabled, but it sure helps when you know how to deal with it.
Once you successfully start and keep your engine running follow Murph's instructions for catapulting from the deck. If the carrier is operating at it full speed around 30 knots on a Fleet Carrier (CV-Fighters, Dive Bombers, Torpedo Bombers) or Light Carrier (CVL-Fighters, Topredo Bombers) you should be able to get off of the deck with every load from the "CAT". At lower speeds or if on an Escort Carrier (CVE-Fighters, Torpedo Bombers) whose top speed is 19 Knots you will be limited in your choice of ordinance to get off of the deck.
I believe that the 4000 pound bomb load of the F4U-1D/Corsair MkIV would have been from a land based airfield not a carrier deck with or without a catapult and RATO (Rocket Assisted Take Off). The F4U-4 (not in the game yet in HSFX at least) with that load may have been powerful enough to get off of an Essex Class Carrier deck using a catapult during the last few months of the war, but I doubt it.
I hope this is what you were looking for in an answer.

Why the smart remark?
T.A.Sharpe asked why his engine was getting damaged after spawning. He was told what the problem was (advanced engine management), but not how to prevent the engine damage when spawning on a carrier deck. I explained that upon spawning (on a carrier deck) he had to unchock then chock his wheels immediately to stop the engine damage even before he started the engine. I then explained what he had to do with the throttle & propeller/pitch control to prevent damage to the engine when he starts it.
T.A. Sharpe asked how the catapult worked. Someone else answered that question.
T.A. Sharpe made reference to a Corsair and 4000 pounds of bombs from a catapult. I answered to the best of my knowledge about that loadout, the corsair and taking off a from a catapult. I tested it last night and I found out that you can in fact get off the deck of the Essex from a catapult with 4000 pounds of ordinance.
So I ask again what is question regarding English being my first language or not?

i guess you misunderstood me, i wasnt trying to start anything i was jus wondering becquse where you said you retard the throttle to zero, not that thats wrong or anything just wonderin'

Retard is another term for lower or reduce. It was used often during my 24 years in the Navy, so I didn't invent the terminology.
Advance the throttle.
Retard the throttle.
Hope that explains it.

I was wondering about the comment too.
Thanks for explaining it all Mailman!
