Improving framerates?
#1

I thought there was a thread on this before but I couldn't find it so forgive me if this is a rehash of a previous question.
My system is as follows:
Intel i7 CPU 930 @ 2.8Ghz
Win 7 64-bit
Radeon HD5770 x 2 (in Crossfire mode)
16 Gig of RAM

Despite those specs, COD is quite clunky during gameplay. I have tried dialing down the graphics and it doesn't improve much. The smoothest I got was dialing down to LESS than I use for IL2 1946!!!
While the game is graphically impressive it has been a disappointment with regards to actual gameplay. I have only tried free flight as combat is a non-starter in this current situation.
Any tips, advice???? I just got it (US version) from STEAM last week so it must be the latest version etc.

thanks,
tomoose

Disabling crossfire mode as the game is very hit and miss with crossfire right now.

Thanks for the quick reply, erm, how do I disable crossfire?

You could try this.

*Get rid of the opening ubisoft splash screen for faster load times and potential issues with crossfire/sli

Go to Steam>Steamapps>Common>IL2-Sturmovik Cliffs Of Dover>Parts>Gui.

Then rename logo.wmv.

The results were extraordinary. I like so many others, have suffered from poor frame rates on what i thought was a decent system (AMD BE Phenom II 3.4 Ghz, 8 gigs RAM, and 2 x 5830 in Crossfire, lame cards i know). Anyhow -- I dropped the splash screen and since my settings were so low from before, my frame counts were 200 frames per second and peaking to 240. I immediately went into the video settings and jacked everything up - I can run most 'quick' missions at 80+ frames per second, and even the dreaded London tourist, I can get around 40 fps with lots of buildings. Someone had written that the splash screen sets some cards in a 2D mode, and they don't exit. Clearly something like that is happening. Dropping the splash screen was the only change i made for massive performance increase. Yes, I have the latest patch.

Also, here is some of my notes that I wrote for my group after 2 weeks of tweaking:

You're going to need all the resources your system can muster to run this game. Here are some notes that might help you optimize your fps or realize your capped potential.

First things first: Don't expect great results from the game's current state. Patches are coming to fix major performance issues with the game.

Optimally, you'll need more than 1.5GB+ VRAM to run 35fps smoothly over land with MED/HIGH settings(the next patch might fix this). People with 1.5GB+ and PCU 3GHz+ are getting the best results.

Ok, here are some tips Ive read that have helped me:

*Stop all of your Antivirus software
*Stop all unnecessary background programs
*Update to latest drivers

Video Options screen
[Image: 4c7904dc.jpg]

*If you have less than the above benchmarks, you're going to need lower settings than this screenshot for over land. Better performance is experienced over the channel.

Notes:

*Texture Quality Players have reported a performance boost after setting Texture quality to HIGH from ORIGINAL (Original is highest setting)
*Forest has a huge effect on performance.
*Buildings Amount effects the rendering of buildings at a distance. Setting this lower will cause buildings to look like legos until they render.

*Disabling your rear-view mirror can dramatically help frame rates on takeoffs and landings. Since the mirror has not reached its full potential, I disable mine with good results.

*Only supercomputers are flying over London with 30fps+
*Shadowing on the ground/trees is not working correctly as of yet and needs to be fixed in a patch. For best results, set your fly-times to morning or sunset.
*Sound is being fixed in a patch

*Players are having trouble with controllers mapping correctly. If your plane does not trim correctly or pulls to the side, go and remap your AXES trim. I had to remap my RUTTER trim there.
*Shadows check-box has a 5+fps effect on performance. (Awesome cockpit shadows I cant live without)

Of note: Moderators have posted not to make major changes with your confi file due to the current unstable state of the game.

You can get the game to a very flyable and fun state to practice your engine start-ups and do some sight seeing, even smooth dog-fighting/bomber intercepting with the right settings. But, I would probably wait to get into the campaigns or anything dramatic etc until after the first patch

WOW! Getting rid of the ubi splashscreen did indeed smooth things out. Amazing. I did a quick free-flight over London and while it wasn't perfect (slight jerkiness) it was amazingly better than before.
Thanks a lot. Such a silly little thing (the logo movie) to cause such trauma!!!!

I will try again with the screenshot settings shown here to see if there's any noticeable improvement.

alt+left mouse

Also, in regards to stutter: try checking the anti-epilepsy filter. I have had better success with it enabled for some reason

ALSO you can try this:
There is a new AntiAliasing method out by Nividia called FXAA.HUGE

Much progress!!
Just finished flying over London with an avg FPS of 60 compared to the 25 I was getting before. Thanks for the help.
Selecting epilepsy filter didn't seem to make a difference but I left it on.
I can't seem to get rid of the text box in the upper left. Alt-Left Mouse just highlights it and it waits for text entry. I have another blank grey box in the same area which appeared when I right-clicked on the screen and selected "new info menu" now I can't get rid of the bloody thing, LOL. Two steps forward, one step back. D'oh!!!

Ok, Its probably right mouse/close..select close...haha. Its real easy when you figure it out.

Quote:5. Q: I am seeing a gray rectangle in the upper left corner of the screen.

A: You have created a new Info window. These highly customizable windows allow you to set up your own user interface in-game. Due to the fact that the game also features clickable cockpits, our solution to having distinct clickable elements that possibly overlay each other is making the cockpit elements selectable with a regular left-click, and the interface overlay windows selectable with an alt-click.
So, simply alt-click the grey rectangle to select it, and then either move it and resize it, right-click to customize it, or right-click to close it.
This can also be done with all standard interface elements, including no-cockpit gauge overlays. Or you can right-click anywhere on your screen and add new Info windows to your interface layout.

5-A. Q: I did all that, but Closing the window does nothing.

A: We have as of now seen two users who created 52 and 82 overlayed info windows respectively. If you are closing a window and it does not disappear, it probably means that you have multiple Info windows stacked on top of each other. If you do not wish to manually close each window, you can edit them out of a config instead.
All the Info window settings are stored in the [ChatWindow] section of
(Documents)\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\confUser.ini
Our standard interface has 5 elements numbered 0 through 4 and titled "Motor Controls", "Secondary Controls", "Info. Window 1" (no title is shown for this one in game), "Voice", and "NetStats"
If your ChatWindow section looks to have a lot more than these 5 sections, simply delete everything past the lines numbered 4: and save the file.

Yes try to lower your setting's.

Currently my Settings are:
Texture Quality HIGH (Seems to be minimal fps difference between the settings.)
Model Quality HIGH (Just keep as High, no real performance gain as mentioned by developers aswell.)
Anti Aliasing X16 (I'm happy with anything between 4 and 16, You will get around 5 extra fps with 8 or 4 instead of 16, but it is jumpy.)
SSAO OFF (I see little difference but it does take about 10 fps, it may be more beneficial on more powerful computers.)
VSync OFF (Basically Limits your frame rate and fps to that of your monitor to avoid visual bugs.)
Land Detail MEDIUM ( I wouldn't go low, but I wouldn't go High.)
Land Shading LOW ( This can eat up your FPS over vast land, takes about 10-15)
Forests LOW (Your in the air most of the time anyway, adds some detail but can eat FPS, on Very Low it is just flat textures)
Buildings Detail LOW (Makes the houses and towns look a bit better but can steal FPS over Large City's)
Visual Effects MEDIUM (Unless you are dogfighting this really doesn't matter that much.)
Grass, Shadows, Roads ALL OFF (These are only for rigs well above the reccommended.)
Damage Decals MEDIUM (Once again only matters in large dogfights.)
Buildings Amount LOW (Only Immersion, this just determines how many randomly placed houses and objects there are in the country side.)

I get around 25-40 FPS over Country Side with small towns, about 25-30 over city's and around 35-45 over sea. I can do battles of 4-8 Aircraft without having much lag and I even manage to shoot some down, the more you shoot them down, the less lag! In a dogfight with 2 Hurricanes and 2 109's I averaged about 28 FPS.

My System Specs:

-Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz
-RAM: 3.5 Gb
-Video Card: GeForce 9800 GT @ 512mb
-Direct X: 10

Soy you should still be able to do abit better than what I've got.

I just flew the first mission of the campaign.....intercept DO-17s attacking the airfield. It ran smoothly and even managed to down one of them, woohooo!! Confusedhock:

One last question (yeah, right! ), I managed to get rid of the box in the upper left and the "new info window" grey boxes, now how do I get rid of the text radio chatter, it takes up a large piece of the screen on the right side particularly when the radio chatter repeats some commands etc.??

thanks again.

I have repeatedly tried to eliminate the opening splash screen with the pilots face on it with out success . The path you decribed is"Go to Steam>Steamapps>Common>IL2-Sturmovik Cliffs Of Dover>Parts>Gui"

But mine has an additional folder'Go to Steam>Steamapps>Common>IL2-Sturmovik Cliffs Of Dover>Parts>comm>Gui.
I opened the Gui folder and found the logo Icon and changed it to -logo but the entery into the game stays the same????? Sad Sad

It's not the pilot's face splash screen we're talking about it's the little UBI 'globe' with the animation just before you get to the pilot's face. I still have the pilot's face. I don't believe that splash screen has any effect on the game (other than being annoying everytime you start the game, LOL).

There's a missing folder in the previous post, the path I used to find the 'movie' is;
C:\Steam\steamapps\common\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\parts\core\GUI

I simply renamed logo.wmv to backup_logo.wmv and that get's rid of the UBI globe splash screen.

As mentioned it may not work for everybody but I know it certainly made a difference for me.

Hope this works for you.
good luck.

I am still having Frame rate decrease from orignial start up of Cliffs of Dover. It was just brought to my attention that when the game boots there is an icon that looks like a plane with a circle around it. At some point this icon has changed ...it now has two of these emblems one on top of the other. Is this telling me that I have two versions opening up at the same time and could this be causing my fps demise? :-?
