A P-51 pilot I know said they had no tracers at all until the end of the belt. I do not know what color the tracers were at that point.

Tracers are still pretty much standard colors depending on the caliber of the round.

Most US small arms are red. Russian 7.62 is still green and red depending on the type of ammo (Not sure of what type is which).

As far as tracer frequency. This is what WE (Active Military) do on a normal basis:

Every 5th round is a tracer (this is standard in box .50 Cal API)
At the end of the belt, (Last 20 Rnds), all the ball ammo is removed and sustituted with tracer.
This tells us when we are getting low.

In WWII it was much easier to change the ammo configuration early in the war do to manual loading of belts. As the war progressed and Boxed Belted Ammo was more abundant, it became much easier to just modify the end of a belt.
