BF109s in Need of a Mirror
#46

'If 109"s had mirrors, then all that needs to be done is prove it. I think you will struggle as there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary, but good luck anyway.'

I forgive you Willy

Well if we can't be allowed to have the correct view looking out the back of a Tempest that was Historically a vast improved view over the razorback type aircraft, why should aircraft that only a select few had mirrors in them, suddenly all aircraft get them???

What next, extra cannon?

instead of a rearview-fpskiller-mirror for a fighter (turn your head instead man! Big Grin )
it would be so nice to have a rearview mirror on the he111....Mr jolly, i have a picture of two of the he111 with mirror in the BoB perdiode and in afrika.i needed, will send them

Clearly it was more than just a "select few" that had them.

So whats happeing with this? Are we going with historical accuracy, or poll results?

Historical accuracy judging by what's been done so far. Thankfully too as polls are not sure to respect history.

For what it's worth, I voted yes to this, once I finally saw the photos of the Emils with the mirrors. That's is yes to fitting mirrors on the Emils. I'd do the same if I saw substantial proof that others had mirrors back then too, any type, any mod.

I did not just vote one way or another when I saw modern"warbird"photo poorly edited to make it look old. But choose to keep an open mind and wait to see. Many interesting pieces of historical interest have surfaced on this board. To simply have a vote do you want this or not would strangle this interesting historical information completely.

No news from me, I'm not making such mods, I wish I could.
Mr Jolly is your man for news.

AFAIK, some of the Bf 109 E3/F2 Planes had a Mirror installed.

But, it was no installation from the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke/Messerschmitt.

It was a costum field modification made by pilots. They had seen it on enemy planes.
I don't think, this modification have improofments to the german pilots, the motor vibes to
the mirror could be to strong.

I had found an article about this case yesterday, but can't refind it now.

I try my best...if I find it, I will post.

My Vote is NO. My fav plane is BF 109, I fly it near all the time. No facility installation = no mirror.

RAF_Magpie Wrote:It is a rare custom mod, applied in-field (much like the '51, but even rarer) and as such we have the option of doing it for our own machines as a custom mod also. Not a bad thing either, if you consider, if you were a Me-109 pilot in real life, and you wanted to stay alive, no doubt you'd get one bolted on...

Although have a look here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php? ... =109+photo you will need a M4T account to see the pics. Unfortunatly there isnt a Me-109 with a mirror in those pics, but as it is a rear mod, applied in custom - why not do it? I think it would be a handy wee tool, as long as you kept to the likes of the round spitfire mirror, or something simular...

With the external mirrors, like this, and for any aircraft, is it possible to actually add them to the external model of the aircraft....?

I actually dont think it was rare at all for the Mustangs. I have seen formations with mirrors installed. It is so simple to do I would not be surprised if it was common for Luftwaffe pilots to install a mirror.

Well, the key to that post, is the custom/field mod bits. When you consider out of the 15,875 ponies bult, that it wasnt factory fitting (to the D models, as were the reference in that post), the rare bit would be well justified. Personally, no matter what I was in, I would mount a mirror.

Hehehe ironically, even checking out the '51 at wiki - check out the lead plane:

As you say, its very simple. Hell, all you need is a drill, a wing mirror off an old Packard (ie) and a nut, and a bolt Smile

And as I said in my earlier posts - a mirror for the 109E's - absolutly... the other models... unsure, I've seen more photo's of the E's with them than others.

But thank you for dredging up a past question I dont believe has actually ever been answered;

With external mirrors - Can they be modeled onto the 3D model of the aircraft their being added too...?

Can't understand why there is still quibbling over this.. We have seen several photos of early 109's with mirrors fitted, and yes, it was done localy in the field..
I'm not a Luftwaffe flyer in the sim, but I see no reason why they shouldn't have one, we have photographic proof.. plus, just because a mirror is fitted on your aircraft in the game doesn't mean it's cheating or you have some kind of mega advantage.. (how many times have you seen an enemy a/c in the mirror and still been chopped out of the sky!)
