The Slot

spud Wrote:What's so amazing to me is that a single person, with a little help has managed to bang out a better pacific map in a few weeks with no official tools, and little understanding of what was needed (compared to the devs) than the PF team managed to build.

WTF were they thinking iwth trying to keep map making some super secret? They could have put out map tools years ago, and there would be HUNDREDS of quality maps by now.

It boggles the mind.

yup i agree, .... but on the other hand they allowed 4.09 beta with all its goods to be modded ... so i'm ok with 1C team Big Grin

Skunk did the lions share of the work, and Bee came up with the texture. My job is to "randomize the textures so that they appear natural, without opening up the jungle to an unrealistic level.

Just wanted to clarify, because I thought I might be getting undue credit. I'm not actually a beta tester of The Slot map (although I certainly wouldn't say no) I just sort of chimed in there for a sec.

Funny you should show that spud, Because I started looking at what could be done next:

But this will be the subject of a another topic I think Wink

Hey Skunk, just wondering - are there limits or restrictions to the number of flights that can take off from the strips at Henderson? I'm just finiding that one mission I made one of the flights insists on being an airstart even though it is clearly (and repeatedly) assigned to take off from one of the runways. It's the player's flight, too, which is even stranger. I have one flight of Wildcat's at the smaller strip, one flight of P-39s (I seem to remember them from Bird_brain's "Cactus Diaries") and te player's flight of RNZAF P-40Ms. I've emailed it to mark to see if it's not just my imagination but thought I'd check here too. I also couldn't get two flights to take off on the two parallel runways - they just merged onto one. I'll try it again. Maybe after having shut down and restarted things have shaken down a bit.
BTW, just for some help with my mission making, from which direction would the Japanese be approaching on this map if the US are at Guadalcanal? I know nothing much about this area of the war.

I'm not sure, but I think this is a "bug" from PF. You cant have seperate flights take off from parallel runways anymore. Or atleast thats my understanding.

Are you saying that you cant even get 3 flights off the same runway?

Hi again,
You know, this really is a nice map already. I've been flying over various parts trying to get this mission working and have often paused to admire the scenery.

MY PROBLEM
I can't get a Player flight to take off! It always airstarts! Can anyone repeat this problem I'm having? It must be something I'm doing.

At Henderson AF on Guadalcanal I have set two flights of fighters to take off from the main airfield's largest airstrip. One of these flights is player controlled. I also have another flight set to take off from the smaller separate airfield. Both AI flights appear on the tarmac in the correct place but no matter what I do the player's flight always airstarts.

I've tried this many times and I swear I've set the waypoints correctly. I have switched the player's flight between all three fighter flights and every time the player's flight airstarts. I have also tried every permutation of flight/runway assignments.

Curious to see if it was due to the number of flights/planes, I selected a Japanese seaplane located at a cool seaplane strip miles and miles away as the player's flight. I had watched it before and it always started in the water. When i tried this option all three of the abovementioned fighter flights spawned on the tarmac as they should have done yet the Japanese seaplane AIRSTARTED!!!

Next I tried changing one of teh fighter units to a divebomber unit - the SBD-5 - to see if it was related to plane-type AI. The same problem happened.

Finally I shifted the player flight in the SBD flight to one of the northernmost airstrips on the map, set it to take off from the little runway perched on teh edge of the beach. Sure enough - airstart. The fighter flights and the IJN seaplane all started on the ground or water.

It may be that the mission itself has got some kind of corruption in it so tomorrow I'll try to open the map and make a fresh mission.

Could someone else try this out to see if anythingn similar occurs? I'm sure someone would have spotted this already if it were really a bug. I'd only used airstarts prior to tonight so hadn't encountered this problem.

Anyway, I'll leave you with some images of MacWan's lovely RNZAF skins showing the planes nicked off the obliging US forces by scrounging NZ airmen.

I'll experiment with this FSM, but when I did my test missions, all flights spawned on the ground no problem. Then again I only had 3 total flights on the map, 1 Bomber flight, 1 escort, and 1 defending.

I'll go try this right now and report back.

Hey FSM, I just tried 3 different flights taking off from the same strip (the largest of the twin strips at Henderson) and everything spawned ok:

I'm in P-39 #1.

I'll try to see if I can assign a flight to the small strip parallel to the big one.

Nocturnum, check difficulty setting, maybe you don't have take off and landing enabled.

Well done. Far better than the huge beaches everywhere and putting green for a few miles inland!

Great, here is a post I made way back when in the PF forum:

We need TWO MAPS

We need all of the Solomaon area, even if it is half scale. We need Guadalcanal for bombers and AAF fighters. AAF could reposition at forward bases as did in real life but bombers were round trip. As the Russells, Munda and New Georgia were captured, the USMC and Navy had forward bases. Bougainville, Ballale, Shortland, Buka etc were very hot areas until October 43. Once Bougainville fell, Rabaul became the hot spot, and with the Ki-61.

We need a second map, again half scale is fine, for New Guinea (Lae) to Rabaul. This would close the gap and complete the PTO maps, IMO

WE NEED TWO MAPS, SOLOMAN ISLANDS and NEW GUINEA/NEW BRITAIN...see white boxes.

New Britain is were you see the Ki-61 etc...and , oh yeah, they are the same size as the Hawaii map :hammer:

What about Lae/Salamaua/Wewak/Hollandia????
We need thes just as badly, as well as Port Moresby revisited.
PS CHeers to the INCREDIBLE job thus far! Tongue
