hock:
Nice!
OK spud. One remark else.
IMO sand around+sand (coral) runway, or dirt around+dirt runway=good look.
But grass around+sand or dirt runway=bad look. Better to use sand (dirt) arround+flat trees+sand (dirt) runway.

Look at the pictures of the real fields though. It's very light wherever the dozer blade was, and everything else is green.
I'm open to looking at it, I can try a few textures and check, but it needs to look like this, too:

One thing to remember, there is very little control of the ground texture. They are in 200m squares. So if I go sand then that's it, no green anywhere at all. It looks totally barren. Note that Palau is done with a special texture that includes the airbase. There are very few texture slots in load.ini available. I could certainly see perhaps using an airbase texture slot for a unique field though. Perhaps Barakoma which might be able to be reused for other short, 1 runway strips (stirling, kieta, etc).
It also might be possible to find a different green. I threw the green I happened to have in the ini on there partially so I could see what I was doing, lining up the sand runway on the coastal texture is very hard to see.
Perhaps there is a green where there are hints of sand/coral where the growth isn't...
There is at least one "hole" in our load.ini, too, a totally blank spot for a new texture. If someone were to make a texture that included undergrowth clumps AND the sand/coral color, I'd be all over it.
Hint hint.

Great work on this map!
Is this ship texture downloadable somewhere?
Thanks

Almost any construction/well traveled paths along the coast turns up the almost blinding white sand/coral. Here is a curent color photo. If it ain't vegetation, its white.

Here is another. It is from google map of the very south end of Vella Lavella just south of Barakoma.
.Freshly constructed areas, well used areas are white. Less used areas are overgrown with some greenery such as the current air strip, Barakoma. However, for freshly WWII built airstrips along the coast just hit with a dozer, nice and white. Almost looks like snow huh?

Pilots at that time described the runways as almost glowing at night, so white would seem to be the better choice for the runways. Period photos as well as modern photos would support white as being the color of choice.

Here is Torokina. The airstrip is now covered by grassymarshy stuff but you can tell by the coast, its not as white. A brown muddy color due to the surrounding swampy stuff.
Take a stroll to the Soloman Islands on Google Map and see fer yerself!
Areas like Rabaul are volcanic similar if not like Hawaii. Look at Google, the volcano erupted not long ago and almost covered the old airfield there.
Munda is more of a brown color due to the volcanic nature as well.

Some of the light color is obviously overexposure on images. I'm interested in the darker colors for munda, etc.
I'm not happy with the current green I'm using, it was just there is all. I'd like somethign that looks less like a putting green, and has more variability to it.

Ok, my last one. Posted this one a few times already. It is from my personal photo collection. With a magnifine glass I can see explicit details. Note on the south side there is construction in the trees. Note the shades of color where trees are freshly cut down, typical vegitaion brown or green color, compared to the actual further clearing of the roots stumps and debris in which the white sand is exposed.

Looking at google (Current munda) it obvious the beach as well as well used paths, roads and open areas are "white". Less used areas do grow over with light green and brown shades with what looks to be darker greens for thinker jungle growth.
