Announcing 'Die Alpen'
#16

Thank you for your encouragement. That will double my efforts.

Value 255 is 4000 m in map_h, that's the limit. Matterhorn ist 4478, so it's cut at 4000m and i didn't found it yet on the map. But got only 125 pixel with 255, there are very few mountains higher then 4000 m in the Alps. But for the Himalaya even a 1/2 scale wouldn't fit ;-). - Couldn't use the the standart bridges either, but trains and cars can walk some way upon the water.

I started six or seven weeks ago, but it took me a week to understand the basics and an other to understand gimp and the layers and i'm still learning. In the tutorials that 'map-c must be 1 bit' should be changed, switching my mostly ready 1-bit map_c to the much better (soft river banks) 8-bit greys took a lot try and error and made some problems and will make further problems.

Current status:

map_f and the eds: I update them from time to time, takes some minutes

map_c: altmost done, for some reasons i will add some smaller lakes and may be later more rivers.

map_h: If have just to iron some airport- and city grounds and to fix some rivers (which is barly possible atisfactory within the fmb, we need a river equilizer tool)

map_t: Only basic textures, markings for airports and bigger cities, basic railways and highways (i still have to fix them in hilly areas), not more. May be 2%.

texts: just a few dozens names

actors: just a few archetype cities and 20 or 30 airports. Hm. 1%.

map_r: I have one but don't understand that.

What was wrong with the links? Thank you for editing.

The prefix should be 'zip', i think.

for the height, try this file, it might help you to work with 3dem software.

I do not know if it has some interest, but at home, I have a non-detailed map which indicates air basis and airstrips in Switzerland at that time...

If you want, I can scan it and mail it to you, zipzapp... just give me your mail adress by MP !!!

Yes....it is a pity that Map_c is not editable in the FMB.....to alter the course of rivers in 3D mode would be useful....we can do that with the roads and rails, laying down a section at a time whilst trying to follow the contours

I do not have a map_r either...???

Averything worked fine till yesterday. Then i added some more airports. Suddenly the cursor stuttered. Savingtime increased dramtically from seconds to a minute or more. I added an other airfield. More stuttering and saving error.

I deleted three airfields. Everything worked fine again. I added some other airfields. Error.

I copied & pasted some cities. Suddenly again that stuttering. Copying a bigger cluster of objects suddenly didn't work no more. Again a saving error.

Size of actors.static: About 400 Kb.

I disabled displaying some kinds of objects. That helped. But only at the moment, i'm afraid. Seems to be a limit somewhere, that will be reached again briefly. Otherwise somewhere i read about an actors of some megs? Is there some kind of overall limit?

Has anybody experiences with that? If there ist no solution, i have to cancell the projekt, i am afraid.

So that is a known problem? I have had a look at the tools, seem to be very difficult to handle. Will cost me a week, not to mention the difficulties with different files ....Nevertheless, thank you so much, thought, this would be the end.

it's not so much of problem ....

when having several actors files .... place each in its own folder .... place Act tool in those folders .... extract each file so you have bunch of outxx.txt files .... than just copy lines from those files into main actors inxx.txt files ( read carefully readme .... )

Thank you again, joining the statics is quite easy. I just finished the airports and will start building the cities & villages. First i will create only a few hundreds so that won't take long.

@Hartmann: You should have said that a few weeks earlier .. tell me the name of the place and i will set it at the outside margin.

Have you tried using the "AUTOPOP" tool?

viewtopic.php?t=3816

I tried that and works very well, allows populating all cities of a map quite easily (tou only ned final retouches)

Sorry, i took a little break ...

Hartmann, 40 Km is a little far away, indeed .. may be, i'll create a little villiage named "Neidligen" (watch the difference ;-)) with a very small and simple private aiport ..

Maraz, i didn'nt try the autopop yet, will do that tomorrow. I'm quite shure, i will use it.

Gaston, thanks for the offer, but i already got such a map and the swiss airports are already done (even if not very accuratley AFAIK and with a few non-historically airports for waterplanes and so) . But where i do need help are the glaciers. I didn't found any map or usefull geographical information and know nothing about them(I live in a different area). Where on the map are that dammed glaciers? Best would be a map of 1940 or so covering the whole alps, naturally ;-)

You need to separate your airfields from everything else. Its MUCH easier to work with, saves on memory load and you can merge them later with the actors tool. Team Pacific proceded this way with the Slot after we started running into the memory issues you describe.
