discuss only** Thailand-East Burma-Indo-China map

I am now on the hunt in Chiang Mai for 40's, 50's photos.
I now know of a couple of places to see in Chiang Mai to view them.
I asked the teacher's at school where I work if they knew of any places and the school has some in an old wood Thai style house n the school grounds.
Will be checking them out early this week.
I'm trying to get a good feel of what Chiang Mai was like back then 49's and 50's from photos.
They are hard to come by but well worth searching for them.

Fabianfred,

I do not want to take away other users' benefit of upgrading their hardware.

I do not have a performance problem due to outdated hardware.

I can play il2 and the Mod Maps on perfect with decent fps. I have a AMD 4000+ Processor, 2 GB Ram and a x1950xt with 500 MB RAM.

Your Thailand Map performs very well without the flora objects. But with the Flora objects f.g. in Dawn Attack il2 completely locks up.

As far as I understand the Flora objects are a special custom designed Palm tree. There are Palmtrees in the stock version which do not cause problems for me.

I think it is pointless to spent some hundred of EUROS to upgrade my system in order to get a Palm Tree displayed on a Map which plays perfectly well except for one single object, which is not even essentially important in it

@ Farang....great news.. try asking at CM airport (RTAF) if they have a museum with any photos of what the strip at CM was like too

@ McMart .... are you sure it is the palm tree which is causing problems, because my trees and flora include many things.... Banana trees (3 types); Bougainvillea; Bamboo grove: Flame-of-the-Forest tree (two types); a Yellow blossom tree;
but none of them are placed upon the map in any density......just here and there, spread out amongst the buildings in the lightly populated towns, and one or two around some of the airstrips.

Are you actually able to isolate the problem to the new palms (Which I copied from the normal palms, but changed the trunk colour and added coconuts)???

If you are sure it is the palms causing the problem for you...then simply go to the folder in MODS which has my Objects...and put a '-' in front of the name of the folder palms2 ...making it -palms2 ..... and this will disable that object
There shouldn't be any need to remove the lines in the static.ini....the object will just not appear on your map

The map is fully patched now loading and saving perfectly.

There is an aircraft museum at Chiang Mai airport but you need 3 people to book a look around.
Next time when my wife's daughter is here from Chiang Rai I'll take them there for an afternoon.
You never know I may get Thai price instead of farang price.
They have the remains of an AVG hawk that took some flak during the Chiang Mai raid and crashed in the hills. The pilot escaped the crash. Can't remember his name right now.
You can fly around Chiang Mai in a Bird Dog as well.
I'll put up some screens from time to time of Chiang Mai template WIP then when it is finished I'll send to you for another ffb_Thailand patch.
Am getting an upgraded computer box in Chiang Mai early next month dual core high speed processor, fastest possible.
4 gig of ram, Nividea 9000, 250 to 300 gig memmory.
Will be much better for your map etc.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This map is spectacular,Cheers fred for all your time and hard work. Also Cheers and Thank You Bee for your static.ini file,I was having the same saving mission prob. that alot of people were having but now I'm good to go Big Grin

Just as a point of interest for anyone who might want to try this out,I found a link to a great website that lets you listen to LIVE Air Traffic Control from all over USA[and parts of the world] this site

http://www.liveatc.net/ it's highly immersive on a map of this quality to just fly and take in the sites without any combat I enjoy taking a B-17 heavy to one coast to the other and set up some AI routes going parallel to mine,it's a lot of fun check it out. Big Grin

Thanks Badaboom ........ it is certainly spectacular scenery ..... and as I've mentioned before, looking at the layers of hills in the distace with the new long-distace setting in 4.09 is great

Hi Fabianfred,

first I was convinced that it were the palm objects which caused my problems with the map, because when I did not load them I did not have problems with the missions you designed for your map.

I think it is great that you did not "only" design the map, but also supplied the community with very hig detailed missions.

After further exoperimenting with different drivers, dlls (core + mgsound), I finally got rid of the r4 rocket glitch, but suddenly recall crashed even without palms. But I was able to make a long distance flight with palms with a single airplane across the map.

I was wrong. The flora objects are OK. My latest conclusion is that it is a problem with the amount of memory which is used by the map and the memorxy of the objects which are used by the great scenery you set up in your missions.

In order to run them without problems I had to delete some flights, campfires and smoke objects.

After having a close look at the missions and having read about your "infamous" Pearl Habour mission I now better understand your modding approach. But it is a pity that in the moment my system cannot cope with it.

At least I can use your map with less detailed mission setups.

I am now curious what your hardware setup is like and what combination of dlls, conf.ini settings etc. you are using.

Yes...I do seem to be a bit heavy-handed when making my missions....I love loads of action

actually i have a new version of recall...which has nearly 90 planes in it (still not quite up to realistic numbers though)

but now I am working on the Lower Burma map and have transferred the Recall mission to that... and altered the flights and a/c and routes etc to be like the real attacks... see here for more info..

Hello Fabianfred,

I downloaded and installed your new map, patched with patch v2b, and also played all the missions you uploaded.

THANKS A LOT FOR THIS HUGE AND FANTASTIC WORK!

I have some screenshots with a few questions:

Is this the normal landscape with straight canals near Bangkok?

Also, after taking off with your B-24 mission, I noticed this:

Is that a normal sight? There seems to be a wrong or missing texture, I don't know.

In this one, A6Ms and Ki-21s took off from an airfield with strange green textures on the runway:

Also, I got strange error messages when opening the console in game:

Missing file: Buildings/Thai/Pagoda/Live.sim (cannot be loaded, etc). I could not find a Pagoda directory in 3DO/Buildings/Thai, only a Farm one. But this entry appears in the static.ini, hence the error? I also have 2 House$ThaiFarm entries in the static.ini. Any reason for that?

And finally:

Cannot load HMask1_3DO
Cannot load HMask2_3DO
Cannot load HMask3_3DO

The last three meesages appear in the console near the base when flying the RAF attack mission.

I hope this feedback will be useful to you to further improve your already great map.

Cheers,

Vincent

thanks for your feedback.....

yes there was an extensive canal system around Bangkok ...it used to be called the Venice of the East

but because we are limited to a minimum width of one pixel....and no chance of smooth curves in the il2 game engine, we have to put up with angular looking things like this.

in the V.2b patch I included a new large plate I have been experimenting with ...this one represents the old moated city at Toungoo ....(picture from google earth) ...and there are another two to the NE of Tonle sap in Cambodia to represent Angkor Wat

the green bits showing through the runway are where the ground underneath the plates is a bit uneven ... i just ignored it

the missing files can safely be ignored too

to add new strips at Mudon and Martaban (satelitte strips from the main one at Moulmein)

also a better main railyard at Rangoon ...more like the real one... a frequent target for both sides

Impressive railyard ! Confusedhock:

I found this satellite view of Angkor, you may want to use it for a higher res plate ?

yes...I got my Angkor pic from Google earth...

The railyard I copied from my Burma Lower map WIP .... and I have a mission for that which i made which has eleven trains running altogether...passing through the junction or stopping or starting there...and a new locomotive with its tender only, shunting back and forth

Hi all,

I am finally done moving house and got my new internet connection up and running. Im so glad to fianlly be done moving!

While my internet was down I was clearly unable to fly online so I began a huge project with this map. I have begun building a single player offline campaign for the AVG. All mission that I have made so far have been meticulously researched and will be doing the same throughout the campaign. I know that this map covers only a part of the area the AVG fought in during late '41 and early '42, but as I reacall FF is working on and additional map that incudes other parts including Kunming. As this map becomes available I will be creating missions for it as well. Basically the map is going to utilize both maps throughout the campaign in a historically accurate timeline.

Becuase the new map with Kunming is not available, the campaign is still very WIP but work will continue with the current map. Once the new map is available I will fill in the blanks with the missing missions from the time line.

Stay tuned and I will keep you all posted on the progress.
