I think I'm missing something here.

Do you really use textures only for most cities, villages and industries? And even ones that clearly show the countries in a development state that was unheard of during WWII?

I don't know, I rather prefer the Slovakia way, there I can fly below 1000m without seeing the immersion vanish.

Actually I was very careful to avoid modern buildings, highways etc....I think the Heinkel shot posted fares pretty well with the famous original. I grew up in London and most of the buildings I've depicted are back to back Victorian terraces. Central London was pretty much as it is now. The suburbia depicted was mostly designed and built late 19th Century-1930s. It hasn't changed all that much.
The buildings don't work quite as well below about 800 FEET (not metres) but it's certainly not an 'immersion killer'. As most flying in game is done above 800ft it shouldn't be a problem.

I like the use of the textures for cities etc. They look far more convincing than objects from altitude, and not that bad at low levels either.

A mission maker will be able to add buildings to cities that they will be flying near if they don't like the textures-only look.

I heartily agree........

Trying to populate a map with buildings to look anything like as real as these shots is not possible.... and anyway, the BoB was a fighter/bomber intercept battle and not really a ground-pounding thing apart from the time the LW went for the RAF airfields.

Have you got room in the load.ini for all these textures.....lol?

One question.....will missions written for the beta work on this or will their co-ords need to be adjusted?

after seeing these texture shots I'm really looking forward to this....... makes the work i put into my Thailand map seem paltry in comparison

I think the textured approach to the urban centres is the best possible compromise for the IL2 game engine as it stands today. On top of that... convincingly populating a city such as london with actual objects would not only tax the computer of the average user but also be more than a full time job for canonuk. Compans is right... if you're flying at operational altitudes the only thing you'll see is an impressive cityscape beneath you.

I built a terraced (very small) 3D city for my Kanalkampf campaign which slowed frame rates down considerably. I've always wanted to see convincing organic-looking European cities in this game.

I'm laughing here...the BoB:WoV players know why. a lot of people said BoB2 is rubbis because of the 2d landscape: finally, it gets introduced in il2 too!
A very good idea indeed. Those textures look amazing! This is gonna be a top work...the diamond of AAA. Canon, Compans, both of you for president!Smile
However, I hope it will include 3d treelines...will it?

Canon: congrats for the baby! teach him/her all about map modding as soon, as possible!
