[MOD] AI Mod V.17 *UPDATE*

Quote:IMO, the AI planes are using the vertical a bit too much. I am seeing hammerheads and stall turns and loops and vertical scissors, all of which are very good, but there seems to be a lack of horizontal maneuvers.

+1

The vertical maneuvers are really good, but it would be much better if you could add some more horizontal maneuvers as well.

Slikk

I'm thinking this may not be about the AI at all, but about managing aircraft is some way.

The P39 flying against the 109x and 190x after 1943 was very competent. The reason was the tactical way the P39s flew and fought. Pokriskinin was a masterful in developing tactics to defeat German fighters using the P39. THe allies hated the P39 for the most part and never really go a handle on fighting as effectively as the Soviets.

Then again the F4F in the Pacific was a loser against the A6M2 until the US started using the Thatch weave tactics and the aircraft became a star during the battle of Midway and thereafter.

The Japanese had tactics they used as well.

There were many successes in air combat by aircraft that were insuperior in most respects. The way the aircraft were flown with team tactics, etc. made the difference.

I don't know if tactical elements can be included. I would suspect they would have to have some type of on-the-fly commands that could be given during combat.

Anyway, thanks for a great mod. I love it.

Because of this excellent mod I was able to do something tonight that I

Hi Certificate,

I am sorry, but I can't provide you sample mission. I use DCG, latest version, no planes added, just your mod. Issue with ground hitting is simple: New Guinea map - every plane bellow 2000 m is in danger. Most likely to P40E (jabo) on ground attack mission. I've seen hole flight of 4 planes hit the ground (hill). Zero's only when they pursue low flying planes (aces). P-400 hit the ground when they go low - not very often. However, I've remebered reading some complaints about this on Ubi forum (vanilla), so this might have been the issue before mod. In my opinion - the problem was present, but more agressive and fairer AI worsened the issue a bit. I have verified this many times watching all planes behaviour. So - use DCG, Imperial Japanese Navy, and you will have your mission. Look at P-40E, G4M's torpedo mission.

Now, I have watched thing, which is really a bug. If you issue command "Attack my target" the AI - wingman, targets the plane, attacks the plane, but it's 500 m bellow (starting above the bomber) shooting into empty sky! Seen twice in three missions concerning bomber attacking (same rules as above).

Second thing - Jobo's do not engage if under a personal or unit threat. It is funny to see P-40E trying to evade with the bomb... Let them drop bombs and attack, they are sitting ducks.

It is great mod for sure, so I hope this will help you to improve the issues... Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Love the mod for Air vs Air, but unfortunately I'm having some issues with Ground Attack, especially Jabos. I just flew a mission with F4U providing close air support, and the entire squad of 4 planes crashed into the ground while attacking (this was on the Burma Map). I pulled out the AI_MOD folder and all the planes survived.

No worries though, I'm sure you'll figure this issue out. Thanks for all the hard work.

The comment about 'attack my target' not working rings true. I'm having issues with ordering my wingman to do that and he instead flies away to be never seen again .. (ends up heading in some random direction).

Uhh... this is a minor, I tried it out of fun;

Yak-15 -landing light in daylight,

Ta-183 behaves as fighter-bomber with missiles (guided&unguided R4M).

AI wingman in Po-2 with 2x50kg bombs flies into the ground (if took off), "autopilot" cuts engine...

4 Tempests vs 4 Fw-190A-8 (all vets), I suspicously easy shot two Fw's. But maybe I was lucky, as got big hole in the wing in process Wink

nice AI! effective attacking now!

The AI is fantastic now. Very suprising an very un-predictable.

Also got a very big shock on a recon mission when I encounterd two Yak 7A. They came head on at me & I thought they would do the usual fly over my plane - split s - come in on my tail but no, they made a head-on attack against me with the result of killing my pilot. Nearly crapped my pants!

One thing I have noticed with ground attack planes verses tanks is that they seem to shoot just beyond the tank. Ive noticed this with average skill Hurricane MkID and the Hs-129B armed with a BK 13 gunpod.

Agree with this point. This is a bit unrealistic. Flew a DGEN mission today when my flight of 4 Bf109K4C3s got a flight of 4 La 5Fs fighter-bombers (unescorted): not one of the La-s jettisoned the bombs; in fact they flew like bombers- trying to evade with the bombs attached.

If you do not want the Jabos to jettison at the first sign of trouble maybe you can implement something like this:

IF no. of escorts is greater than no. of enemy fighters
AND/OR IF the Jabos hold a significant energy advantage over the enemy (meaning the Jabos will be able to bomb the target before the enemy catches them)
THEN Jabos *do not* jettison.

Now honestly I do not know how complex (or simple) this kind of implementation can be- it's just a suggestion.

Otherwise IMO the older Jabo behavior (i.e. jettison at the first sign of trouble) is preferable.

Certificate,

I've run a couple of tests with the mod and without. In both cases AI hit the ground, so it is not the issue of your mod. The difference is only in a simple thing: in your mod all planes hit the ground on the way to the target, in vanilla 50% hit the ground on the way to the target and rest on the way back    . However, it still remains as AI issue, so it would be great, if you could do something with that.

This MOD might need a bit of fine tuning, but honestly, I don't care: this is the best MOD ever. Certificate, you are the savior of Il2. You solved the biggest - and most annoying - problem of this game.
Thank you so much for your work!

Either Certificate is sequestered in his secret AI lab creating the "Mother of all Mods" or the men with narrow ties have finally caught up with him and he's been dragged away. I hope it's the former. Tongue

Certificate, come back and save us from comrade 'lawndart' land!

I think it's a case of the AI pilots, having given their all in air to air combat - as never before called upon to do in the il2 universe - simply sensing the futility of it all whilst droning home and then just choosing to pancake their way to the abyss which calls us all, eventually.

Fatalist AI, that's what it is. They need more happy pills.

The never-ending spiral climb is unfortunately still very much a part of the AIs repertoire
That and having a go at mother Earth, from time to time.
Otherwise, this mod does show some promise Cry
