Map Building for Beginners

Yes, you are correct, you get a 1:1 scale map.

If you want a half scale map you must set the map pixel size in Microdem to 100 instead of 50.

Thankyou for your feedback.

one final question came to mind

When you are making map_T and and you click threshold and it comes up with that colour scale box usually the left number box says 127 and the right number box says 255

you then check that both boxes ay 255 and clock ok.

My question is this do you just do this once to bucket fil regb's or do you do it everytime for a new rgb bucket fill.

I ill check your Manam out today.

I used a copy of Uni installer and changed the map maker to 4.09 6dof off

I wont bother you for a bout a week or so.

Hi Kirby

You just do the Threshold box once on map_T.

The reason for setting the Threshold to maximum is to make the land recede a little & so allow the beach texture to appear all around the coastline.

This morning I did a complete reinstall of game reverting back to the old English sound mod and stayed clear of the unified installer for the map maker game.

1) I checked your map files against mine. Everything was ok except the edmap 2 mine was much smaller then yours possible scaled it twice with frustration.

2) I check my edmap2 again in gimp and rescaled properly.

This morning I was possibly thing map_T rgb values etc.

3) I loaded up your map first it went in perfectly

4) after rectifying edmap2 I put in my map and Thank you. Big Grin Smile   Confusedhock:

Please view the screen shots It is Manam Island I did not put in the lava flows as yet .

Now I can finish off the lava flows and the rest of the tutorial.

THANK YOU KEVIN You have created a huge and only occasionally a slightly frustrating learning curve for many here

I am keen to know this so I can give more back to this community

AT LAST

Your main problem seems to be getting the size right. I think you do every thing else correctly.

Cheers, Kevin

Anyone have an airfield tutorial? :?

I make the area flat with map_h (yeah..i use PAINT Tongue ), place the plates but dont undestand how to use the waypoints, taxis,etc...

Oh, and by the way...figured out how to make rivers and lakes.I made a copy of xxx.Grey and edited the it , yes...with MSN PAINT again and filled the river courses with the red color, for lakes is easy. Lakes have the same elevation so its one color in the grey.bmp..just use the fill and it will be very close to the real area. And i made the map_c with this bmp. After that i came back to the original xxx grey.bmp and made the map.h and the coast align thingy... voila!, have rivers and lakes on the map.

Anyway to make the Water texture not transparent?? Because if you fly very low u can see like below the mountains...

Runways: Look at the Sticky tutorial titled This is how Runways work.
Also just look at other maps like the Slot to and see how their runways are set up.

First, you must align the RUNWAYS" red arrow STRAIGHT with your runway ground plates. This was my mistake when I first started.
Second, place the "RUNWAY" waypoints at each end of the runway and in its middle too if you prefer to start exit taxiing from the middle after landing.
Third, connect the "TAXI" waypoints to the runway waypoints and make a taxi path to where you want the planes to go to.
Fourth, connect "STAY" waypoints to the taxi waypoints. This is where your plane will stop.

Hi,

Please help, I've tried all week long to get this right but I get the same message
" Sector ( Map 2D ) not found in ' maps/Manam/Load.ini "

I've even replace the folder with the one KEVINE made.

I'm LOST.

Hi, Kevinp

Thank for getting back to me so fast, sorry about the miss spell

Yes, I can get HB_PacificIslands map to load.

Hi Kevinp,

I'm sorry, but I had the file in the wrong folder. Move it to the right folder an it works fine.

How do you tranfer a new map to the regular game ?

Thanks Kevinp

Glad you sorted that out.

On page 66 of my tutorial I briefly explain how to transfer the map to the regular game. If your game doesn't have Mapmods it's easy, just copy + paste the whole Mapmods folder into the regular MODS folder. However if you already have maps there you need a bit more care. First copy + paste your new map to - MODS/Mapmods/maps. Then open "all.ini" & write in the name of your new map the same way you did in the map builder game (Manam Manam/load.ini).

Good luck, Kevin

Hi Kevin

Have been busy with other things this week

I made the lava flows . Will post some screen shots after I have corrected the few height shifts around the island at shore level and detailed the textures more so

Cheers Kirby

Good to see it all finally happening

I'll move back to that other project after this I'll think I'll use the other converter as it does the scaling for you on map_c and map_h

Hi Kevin,

How do you make larger maps ?

2 os 3 times the size 672x480 does the pixel size remain 50 meters per.

What are the rules of map size building limits?

And thanks for all your time and effort you put in this tutorial.

The size on map_c always remains 50 metres per pixel.

You could make a map of the whole Bismark sea DEM by converting the merged DEMs
to 50 metre pixels without any cropping. It would take five or more minutes to process.

A faster way is to set the map pixel size to 200. This would
be the right size for map_h but to make Mymap_c you would have to scale it up with Gimp
to four times the size. This has the advantage that it automatically blurs the coastline.

Remember that whatever the size or shape of Mymap_c it has to be in multiples of 32.

I believe the largest map that can be made is 65536 x 65536 pixels. If I try to make a map
even half that size with Gimp it freezes up on me.

Hope this helps. Kevin
