Map Building for Beginners

You can try to upload your map to this folder

http://www.4shared.com/dir/14391334/a5ad...nuatu.html

I've never given someone an upload link before, so I may have done it all wrong.
If it doesn't work can you give me a link to download your map from.

I don't think you need an ed_m03

My ocean and river water is not level near the land edges. I've been avoiding this problem until now. Is there a way to fix this? Is there a map tool? Will that coast-alignment tool fix this? Or do I have to adjust the coast line heights on mapH?

check here

(The link is inoperative)

The Coast-alignment tool will fix it, but not completely.
You will still have to go around every part of the coastline
& correct it by hand using the Fill tool. I have tried fixing it
on map_h but I always miss too many bits.

It's the most unpleasant part of map building but can't be
avoided if you want a good looking map.

Thanks to both of you for the info. I didn't think about using the Fill tool either. That's one way to be specific for a particular area.

Hi Kevin
I will do one last final check of my maps and calculations today will try sending tonight.

Just to clarify I know I had problem with the first ed map for Manam

In the tutorial you say crop the colour bmp down to the grey bmp which would be the new multiples of 32 size not the original size(correct?). Then half that size I divide by two for both width and length
Save it as edM01 then half that again divide by two and save it as edm_02.
My map_h and map_t are always the same size as each other.
Just to let you know I used the mapc3 tool this time.

Want to redo these today with calculation checking. I've done a couple of times and always get a size of 40mb for edm_01 and about 10mb for edm_02
ed maps I don't use the ratio 1:40 as it is a big map.
Mymap_c is around 55mb still way below 64mb.

Will upload tonight

I checked your map files & they are all good.
I need to see your ed_m files. The problem must be with them.

One thing though, the naming of map_c.tga & map_c.tga_table.
The ones I downloaded have got the last part of the name repeated.
Is this just an uploading mistake or are your files wrongly named.

Hello KevinP - re your texture guide - am I mssing something or is there something special you have to do to save a .bumph file in gimp? Mine says it does not recognize that extension and won't let me save. --viking4570

Save it as ".tga" & then re-name it ".BumpH".

The BumpH extension is not recognized by any programme
except IL-2. I think its just something invented by Oleg.

Now I have to go & re-write my tutorial again but thanks
for your feedback.

Will do that in the morning if needed.

You'll get a very big mention in the new up and coming WIP thread for this

A big Thank you to you and your tutorial

If you get it loading keep a copy for yourself too

Hi!

Sorry for being so dense, but I can't figure out how to use the Map-folder specified in the tutorial.

I have made a separate modded IL-2, patched to 4.09b and put it in mapmaking mode, including deleting the Paintschemes and MODS folders, and erecting a Maps-folder.

Since I just wanted to fool around with things a bit before starting to make maps from the ground up, I tried to modify the Online 9, a simple small map that comes with the game. I had some fun putting in names and a bit of forest, but saving it to the Maps-folder only saved it as a mission file. I tries in stead to put one of the community made maps that I know work in the Maps-folder to play with it in stead (the excellent Libya-map). I can access the folder via "Open as", but I can't get any of the files to run as a map. Neither does the map show up in FMB (probably since it does not sit in the MODS-folder).

What is it that I have missed?

There's not a single thing wrong with your map. It loads perfectly.
I can't understand what could be wrong. Check that your Vanuatu
folder is in the right place & also re-check the names of map_c.tga
& map_c.tga_table

I think I'll redo the map_c and map.tga_table again tomorrow.

MODS/mapmods/maps/Vanuatu correct

Vanuatu Vanuatu/load.ini

How did it look anyway?

I thought I was possibly going crazy some time this week but wasn't quite sure when I was going crazy.

I'd follow the turorial to the letter recheck calculations 3 times etc.

After checking your Manam to mine and finding that slight scaling error my Manam loads
perfectly. with this 4.09 version
I wonder if it's a conf.ini thing I may put up a specific thread on this.

Hope it looked ok Kevin

Thankyou for your time and effort

You can't save the map called "Online9a" unless you have a folder
called "Empty1a" in - IL-2 map builder/Maps (confusing yes).

If you look in the "all.ini" file you will see that many of the maps have
different names to the ones you see in the FMB. They are still in the
same order so you can count down from the top to find the correct name
of your map.

To load a new or modified map it needs to be in - Mapmods/maps & the name
of the map & its load.ini has to be written in the "all.ini" file.

Put the Libya map in- Mapmods/maps & write LYBIA_N-E JV69_LYBIA_N-E/JV69_M_load.ini in the all.ini

To save a map you have to have a folder with the map's name on it
in - IL-2 map builder/Maps

It looks OK but there is a fault on the west side of Ambrym island
which you need to correct on map_c
