WIP: New Arctic area map from Mixx_

agracier Wrote:I made a set of -10% desaturated textures for the map and just tried them out. Didn't have time for screenshots, but I'd say that the desats loose too much of their green color, so that overall the terrain tends to look very rocky and gray, as if the whole area is virtually nothing but outcroppings of rock ...

Of course, with these things you have to take the peculiarities of your own monitor into account. It may be that my screen already tends towards the less dramatic color difference ... and by desaturating the textures my screen gives a much too flat and colorless color ...

So I'll stick with the original textures as they are.

BUT - I did learn what desaturation is for and how it might be useful for future work. So it was a useful exercise.

And what I'd really like to learn is how to add a touch of brown to existing textures, or how to turn green colors in a texture into brown colors - more or less. That might be fun for getting an autumn landscape.

Ok.

I thinks the result depends also if the textures were concieved since the begining for desaturation. As far as i'm concerned i only use desaturated textures on my repainted maps. It's necessary as well for photorealism as to counter balance the high level of detail i use....so i guess i depends what kind of texture you use....

desaturation allows me aslo to unifie the texture of a single map and find a global tone, doing so they appear to be taken from a single place of the world.

I think I agree. The colours are already pretty drab. I think desaturation wouldn't improve things.

+1
These colours looks like in early summer and i must say they are almost right. Of course in real there are more different colours. And i have tested Agraciers texturest for autumn version and they look good too!
Of course things can be done better allways. And all the improvements will be most preciated

For those who want to use the included I-16 type 18 skin by Mangas: it won't load in game 'cause it's a 3 mb bitmap. So after converting it to 1 mb it works.

And I found a tiny little error on this Arctic map:

Beautifull map kapteeni, nice find. Nearly as good as one of yours.

The textures look superb.

You almost feel you are there.

And the detail is most impressive isn't it.

No technical problems for me, map loaded and saved without the objects you gave the link for.

Thank you very much, please send my regards to the map author.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

I wasn't sure about why Mixx have put all that 3do stuff in to his download package, because i can't any russian.... Just ignore those 3do things.
I will post those bugs that we have found to him after few days and he can then make the necessary corrections. It is pretty much finished and he must have been working a long time with this map. Level of detalis is impressive. Like you said, allmost as good as mine (LMAO)....
It still brings back memories for me. I was trying to make my first map and the area was almost 1:1 to Mixx's Zapolare map
viewtopic.php?t=2853&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
except... what i managed to do was a flyable map with about 32 Square kilometers
Those were the times...
I did read almost all the thread again... It was funny. I almost gave up many times... But i finally made it.
So if noob like me can make a decent map, everybody can!!
BTW!
I didn't found this map. Agracier pointed it to me and i DL:ed it immediately. It was at SAS page where he found it, i think.
And this map is cool for cold war scenarious too. When i was a kid, we did see very strange thing at the skies above arctic.... Almost like UFOConfused. Addult's just told u. that Russians are testing rockets again. I wanted to believe that they were aliens, tho.

Kapteeni, while making a simple mission I found the same errors close to other bridges (see red circles). Another thing I noticed is that sometimes a piece of road is missing right after the bridge. I don't know it it affects a car column or something like that, I didn't test it till sofar.
But apart from those errors I love this map. Besides the textures it is highly detailed: airfields, cities, harbours. What a heck of a job must that have been.

Those odd shapes are just single pixel roads that are not connected to other road pixels ... there must have been a glitch in either the automatic bridge making by the map-maker, or else a layer positioned in an other than optimum order in a layered texture file ...

These are the kind of things that others find - not the person making the map ... ha ha.

I think that Mixx has concentrated to cities and harbours. Map has not been test yet. That is why it is betamap. I will inform him about the bugs.
