New Map - Cape Gloucester
#1

It's time for a new map. Here is a link for a map of the Cape Gloucester area in New Britain. Those of you who have seen 'the Pacific' will know a bit more about the area.

As maps go, this is a companion map to New Georgia. It has the same look and feel with similar styled FMB maps. It does however use different textures, which should hopefully give it a different look. It's also fortunate that this map happened to be finished around the time the new Tainan-Kosho pack came out.

The map is, as is typical for PTO maps, rather sparsely populated. Aside from Gloucester itself, there are mainly native villages of varying sizes along with a few small harbors. My favorite area is around Lae, the airbase and town in the lower left hand corner of the map.

There are no load.ini generated trees in this map. I tried to have the textures themselves try to give an impression of dense foliage. It may work to your taste or not, but until we have some rel looking tree textures that look like tropical foliage or palm trees, I find that tree textures look too European for use on PTO maps ...

I agree with you about the trees. Surely there's some way to change the look of IL2 trees to make them look more like palm trees. For now I'll be satisfied with your forest textures with no trees. They always look good anyway.

Hi and
Thanks Agracier! Lovely Map.
Here som flight images during a A6M3-a Zeke flight.
Must say there is a magical sight when you fly this map.
Mighty mountain ridges in far distans make you forget this is a
combat flight sim and not a Sunday mountain flight adventure..
Just fantastik Thanks again. Big Grin

Nice looking map but Rabaul is not on it. Rhetorical thought -- why would you make a map of New Britain, New Ireland and leave off the most important area?

Is anyone making a map of NG, NB, NI with Rabaul or the Solomons that extends to include Rabaul?

Rabaul was the target of countless bomber raids and we do not have any map that covers it. Yes, Rabaul was by passed by the ground pounders but this is a flight sim and there were thousands of sorties on Rabaul 1942-1945.

You could always make the map you want yourself, and then share it with everyone Smile

There already is a map of Rabaul on the latest Tainan-Kosho mod pack ... if you don't want the whole pack with aircraft mods, here is a cut-out:

As for choosing which areas to make a map of. It's mostly an irrational and personal choice I suppose, but in this case it was mainly brought on by watching 'the Pacific'. Just thought it would be an interesting area to make a map of.

When the map won't load, please hit + at the same time. This will give you the error console wherein more explanation about the loading fault will be given. Somewhere near the bottom of your screen there will be a line with something like:

ERROR MESSAGE ....xxxxxxxxx

That is the pertinent line usually. If you can't correct it with this info, please post the line here ...

Possibly I would guess this has something to do with a texture loading error ... but I need more info ...

Your maps are "top shelf" Agracier. I would never say they were irrational. I was just curious why a much needed map had not been produced up to this point but I suspect I think like a navy/bomber pilot and there aren't too many of us out there.

@@@New question. Is there a way to merge this Rabaul map with the Solomons? I think I saw you address the subject of merging two land area maps with water boundaries somewhere; maybe over at SAS.

Well, sometimes I don't know why I choose a particular area either. Except for the SCW, I'm not usually very conversant with detailed events that happened on most map areas. At least not after the Great War at any rate ...

On merging maps, I think it is often simpler and quicker to make a new map from scratch ... especially if the two maps in question were made by different members or teams. You'd need the original layered files to do a good job, also the color and gray bmp's taken from the original DEMS and both maps would have to be to the same scale as well to overlap. Now if it were 2 islands bordered by water all around, then merging the maps might not be that hard. But the number of textures used would have to agree more or less and the texturing mapping per load.ini slot would have to match as well ...

I think it would be better to just make a new map of the area you're looking for.
