Down load TCP Optimizer from here:

Let me know what kind of connection you have (DSL, Cable, T1 etc) and what service provider you use, then I can tell you what to put into the settings.
This will optimize your connection for you.
Hopefully it will solve both your skipping and your dropped connections.

If using a usb connection for your internett check that windows powersaving is turned of for your device, as this can make connection come and go.
Also if its as a own device check that powersaving is turned off for same reason.
Theese are found in control panel device settings.
