If you got a psd template or can provide the files I really would like to give a try texturing a plane, just to test what can be archieved.
I never tried to simulate hand painted canvas w metal and wooden parts, imho it would require different subtextures.

We will provide voids for skinning right in the release of the game.
Each plane will come stock with 3 skins and a void the rest will be up to
The skinners in the community to do, so you will need to wait till release.
