I'm wondering whether a different cockpit might make it easier to get a good result for the U2VS. Basically, we need a 'pit that can be modded to have a plain windshield and no gunsight. What about using the I 153 M62 cockpit?:

It seems from this picture that the gunsight might be removable. The windshield frame would ideally be thinned, but that's not a major issue.
Another possibility might be the Fiat G50;

It's another very simple cockpit and I assume it would be possible to remove the gunsight. Maybe the optically flat section and its two support frames could be deleted to leave just a plain windshield shape?
