Interesting snap from a magazine article:

Shows not only original wartime wear on an FAA FG-1D from 1944, but a little known detail
Shown is the chemical/gas reactive patch which I was totally ignorant of. I'm not sure this was even general knowledge in the aircraft restoration business in 2006, as according to the article this is the only known surviving example
As warning to the pilot, the patch would change color when exposed to certain chemicals or gasses
