Not all planes were visible like that, for that exact reason. Some used a flat paint to prevent this. The only good thing to come from a shiny slick surface is more speed about 12mph more than with thick camo paint. One reason why later Razorbacks and Bubble P-47s came from the factory with a bare metal finish.
I do see a few problems with this. For one you may get a fps drop for the game trying to render this shine from far away. Second, the way the LOD system works, this will simply not work. The farther away you get the simpler everything gets. Textures become a 32x32 pixel and it would be hard to keep a realistic shine on those files.
There may be a way to do this with a sprite, but it will be a good bit of work to correctly get it to appear at the right distance.
